  • Yesterday, August 29, officials dedicated a section of State Route 15 in Pontotoc as “Fred Wicker Boulevard.” Judge Thomas Frederick (Fred) Wicker, Senator Roger Wicker's father, made his home on Highway 15 in Pontotoc for 74 years - from 1948 to the time of his death in 2022. He was city attorney for 8 years, county prosecutor for 12 years, state senator for 3 years, and Circuit Judge for the 1st Judicial District from 1970 to 1990. As a state senator, he championed public education and highways. He was instrumental in developing Pontotoc’s first industrial park along Highway 15 North. As a State Senator in 1968, he was the first legislator to advocate to four-lane Highway 15 as a corridor from the Tennessee line to the Gulf Coast – successfully getting an amendment passed for that project. Decades later, that dream is now gradually coming to reality, with the current Highway 15 4-lane phase being constructed in Pontotoc and Union Counties. Cooper Memorial Highway.” Representative Carl Mickens joined Macon Mayor Phillip McGuire, members of Transportation Commissioner Willie Simmons’ staff, and Cooper family members to unveil the new sign at the Noxubee County Courthouse. This designation will serve as a reminder of the selfless actions of Sergeant Cooper, who died from wounds he sustained in Baghdad in 2005, for many years to come. • According to the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration's National Weather Service, Hurricane Katrina is one of the five deadliest hurricanes to ever hit the United States. The hurricane was responsible for 1,833 fatalities and approximately $108 billion in damage. Within six hours of landfall, MDOT first responders opened all structurally safe roadways to emergency response teams. Within 16 hours, all state-maintained highway lanes had been cleared and opened for the public to access. However, major reconstruction was necessary, including two bridges on U.S. 90. Today, on the 19th anniversary of this terrible storm, we remember and mourn those who lost their lives. We also remember the spirit of determination, not defeat, that aided those of us left behind in our recovery efforts. One lasting lesson from this devastating tragedy is to not take storm preparation lightly. It's once again peak hurricane season, and although we don't see any on the horizon right now, that doesn't mean another one won't come. Make sure you and your family are prepared to weather the worst should it happen. We've made it through before, and we can do it again. Just be ready! 🙏 #Hurricane #HurricaneSeason #HurricanePrep #HurricaneKatrina
