Help Us Support Our Community! We’re excited to announce the launch of our Pretrial Navigation Program aimed at reducing barriers for individuals attending their first court appearances. We are providing free business casual clothing, transportation, and childcare assistance to help ensure everyone can attend court with confidence and ease. How You Can Help: We’re in need of lightly used business casual clothing donations to build an onsite closet. Court dates often come up quickly, so having clothing readily available can make a significant difference for those in need. Donation Details: Location: 393 N. Dunlap St #300, Saint Paul, MN 55104 Drop-off Hours: Monday - Thursday during regular business hours If you have any gently used clothing to donate, please reach out or drop off your items at the address above. Your support can help make a real difference in someone’s life. Thank you for your generosity! Please share this message with your networks to help spread the word.

Dear community, We’re thrilled to share that the demolition of our future community wellness hub is set to begin this month! This marks an exciting step towards establishing a space dedicated to health and wellness in Black and Brown communities. Stay tuned for updates on the development process and ways to get involved. We are actively seeking funding and donations through our generous fiscal sponsor, Indigenous Roots, to bring this vision to life. We are proud to be part of the bail reform efforts in Ramsey County. We will soon be launching pretrial navigation services to assist individuals with resources before their first court appearance. More details about this program will be available in September when we launch! Our outpatient treatment program has a few openings. We provide culturally connected, somatic, holistic healing practices that heal intergenerational wounds. We also offer assistance with board and lodge or other housing arrangements. Please reach out to Danielle at [email protected] or 612-428-1901 for more information. We also have immediate openings for diagnostic assessments and therapy. Don’t hesitate to contact us!

Mobilizing Wealth and Resources for Justice

Standing in solidarity with our community partners at AAPI New Jersey demanding justice for Victoria Lee, a Korean-American woman who was murdered by a police officer in Fort Lee earlier this month. Her only crime was needing support in a time of crisis. She was 25. So far, in the United States, police officers have killed 820 people in 2024. People with serious mental illness are over ten times more likely to experience heightened use of force in interactions with law enforcement. This means that being a person of color with a mental health condition puts a target on your back for a potentially lethal encounter with the police. Our systems of policing are broken. After all, the origins of modern-day policing can be traced back to "slave patrols" in pre-Reconstruction Southern states whose sole purpose was to terrorize and brutalize enslaved people. How do you reform a system based on that foundation? I hope Victoria Lee's family finds peace and justice.

Historical trauma is a form of trauma that impacts entire communities. It refers to cumulative emotional and psychological wounding, as a result of group traumatic experiences, transmitted across generations within a community (SAMHSA, 2016; Yehuda et al., 2016). This type of trauma is often associated with racial and ethnic population groups in the US who have suffered major intergenerational losses and assaults on their culture and well-being. The result of these events is traumatic stress experienced across generations by individual members of targeted communities, their families, and their community. The impact is not only about what has happened in the past, but also about what is still happening in the present to target a group of people or actions by others that serve as reminders of historical targeting (Evans-Campbell, 2008). Historical trauma provides a context for understanding some of the stress responses that children from historically oppressed communities use to cope with difficult situations.

Expressive Arts Therapy and Polyvagal Theory Model. So many of our Institute participants resonate strongly with Steve Porges' Polyvagal Theory as a way of understanding the autonomic nervous system. But wow, some of the graphics and charts that my trauma colleagues produce make my head explode. So after the past year of working with hundreds of classroom teachers in a Federal grant, thinking specifically about arts-based and sensory integration approaches, I came up with this "wheel" that we have been using in sessions and research. Working on a "child-friendly" version next, but for now you'll be seeing this one in presentations and talks for the rest of 2024...and as always, it's a work in progress. And yes, what is "frisson?" It's that joyous experience of skin tingling, exciting body activation when hearing music/lyrics/sound. I also want to note that I do not categorize “dissociation” as a ventral or dorsal parasympathetic experience. Arts experiences often help us to be dissociative in restorative or recuperative ways — or impact us in less productive ways. Something to explore with the individual for sure. Join us for our unique Polyvagal-focused live webinar series in the fall https://lnkd.in/ez6nxjtF #polyvagal #ans #autonomicnervous #mindbody #expressivearts #psychotherapy #trauma #model #conceptual #adults #stress #infographic #dissociation #sympathetic #restanddigest #restoration #sensory #sensoryintegration

Ramsey County told the fees were federal and state requirements, but later recanted and apologized. Now, Ramsey County Board Chair Victoria Reinhardt said the county will review its practice of billing patients for mental health crisis services, including its mobile crisis response, after the charges came under scrutiny. We are not aware of other counties billing patients directly for such services. For example, Hennepin County doesn’t charge residents for crisis services. Dakota County spokeswoman Mary Beth Schubert confirmed Dakota County doesn’t either. https://lnkd.in/gvUT3AmU

Calling all Non-Black People Hate speech toward Black women is rising as VP Kamala Harris moves toward nomination. Black women are experiencing increased misogynoir (discrimination at the intersection of anti-Black racism and sexism in US visual and digital media) and we need to #SpeakUp to #StopRacism. Let's be honest- interrupting racism is hard. Many of us want to be an ally but don't know how. Too often our nervous systems crash and we are unable to act in the moment. We feel frustrated with ourselves and are haunted by instances when we did nothing. You can develop skills to interrupt misogynoir and align your actions with your values! Join a LinkedIn Live event discussing skills in interrupting misogynoir and avoiding harm to Black women. Register at https://lnkd.in/gqX45vzt When is it most difficult for you to say or do something to stop discrimination toward Black women? -At work? -At your kid's sports game? -In line at the grocery store? -Somewhere else entirely? Do you have a specific memory when you froze that now haunts you? Please place comments in the chat, send me a private DM, and share this post. Misogynoir is a term created by Moya Bailey in 2008. See comments for a link to Bailey’s article describing the misogynoir toward VP Harris during her first presidential campaign. Image Credit: Terrance Osborne
