About us

We began as a renewable energy company more than a century ago by harnessing the hydropower of the St. Louis River in northeastern Minnesota. Today, we’re an investor-owned electric utility and division of ALLETE Inc. We deliver safe, reliable, affordable and increasingly clean energy to 150,000 customers, including 14 municipal customers and some of the largest energy users in the United States in a 26,000-square-mile region of northern Minnesota rich with mineral deposits and timber. At Minnesota Power, employees at all levels can develop their strengths, broaden their experiences and take on new roles and responsibilities. We’re also proud to be recognized as a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Company for our commitment to supporting service members, military families and veterans.

Safe travels to the Minnesota Power and SWL&P crews who left today to assist in power restoration from Hurricane #Milton. More than two dozen lineworkers and support staff are on their way to Florida and expect to arrive just as the hurricane moves out of the state. Our crews are joining workers from 29 states who are responding to Milton, and it took only two hours from notifying employees about the opportunity to filling the roster. “This really is who we are and what we do- we answer the call when other companies need help getting the power back on,” said VP of Transmission and Distribution Dan Gunderson. “I couldn’t be prouder of our company’s commitment and our crews’ willingness to step up and help out our neighbors in need.”

Federal and state partners and energy leaders gathered with ALLETE and Minnesota Power leaders today to highlight our key investment in a reliable grid. Leveraging existing assets along with $75 million in federal and state funding, we are modernizing our high-voltage, direct-current transmission system that delivers energy from North Dakota to Minnesota. “Building the clean-energy resources of the future is vitally important, and ALLETE is all in,” said Bethany M Owen, ALLETE chair and CEO. “But as the clean-energy transition accelerates transmission projects like this one that reliably deliver electricity to customers are increasingly critical. This project will improve resiliency and reliability across our region while allowing us to access some of the best carbon-free wind energy resources in the country.” Thank you to everyone, including Senator Tina Smith, Under Secretary for Infrastructure, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), David Crane, State Senator Grant Hauschild, Minnesota Public Utilities Commission Chair Katie Sieben, and Deputy Commissioner of Energy Resources, Minnesota Department of Commerce, Pete Wyckoff for their enthusiastic support and partnership. “I love you guys,” Sen. Smith told us. “You just get after it and make things happen in northern Minnesota and are a model for everyone across the country.” We appreciate that funding for this project is provided in part by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) grant from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, a grant from the Minnesota Department of Commerce and an appropriation from the Minnesota Legislature. You think YOUR inbox is full? Our customer service team received more than 17,000 emails in 2023. Each response was timely and thoughtful, just like the people behind the computers. Like her coworkers, Hannah is a champion for customers. “Customer service can be challenging at times, but also incredibly rewarding,” she says. “I love being able to counsel our customers and provide individualized solutions to meet their needs.” #CustomerServiceWeek2024 #Above&Beyond #CSWeek2024

Imagine receiving 24,494 calls about the same topic- “I have a question regarding my bill.” Our call center staff did just that in 2023 and that’s just fine with Brianna, a customer care and support representative, who says she’s social and loves to chat! But don’t assume the work is easy. They need to be experts in a lot of topics to serve Minnesota Power’s customers, a heavy lift made lighter by her great colleagues. “I truly believe coworkers and your work environment can make or break an occupation, and I have hit the jackpot. We are a great team, always willing to help one another.” #CustomerServiceWeek2024 #AboveAndBeyond #CSWeek2024

If you’ve ever called Minnesota Power (sidenote: Minnesota Power’s call center received 118,000 calls in 2023!) you understand why we’re SO excited to brag about this group in honor of #CustomerServiceWeek2024. We’re highlighting a few of our call center employees this week, starting with Lauren. “The best part of this job is hearing the relief in a customer's voice after a long, frustrating reconnection call,” she says about her job. “One phone call can make a huge difference in their life, and that is incredibly rewarding.” But rewarding doesn’t mean easy. The call center role is ever-changing and complex, as they’re the primary contact for our 150,000 customers. “The hardest part of this job is making sure we end every call with the customer having a plan or resolution and dignity returned; and we execute that goal better than any workplace I’ve known.” #AboveAndBeyond #CSWeek2024
