About us
The mission of the Associations of Migraine Disorders is to raise the medical and general public’s awareness of this condition and to stimulate increased research in this area of neuroscience. Migraine Disorders are a spectrum of neurologic conditions which may have a common genetic and physiologic cause. Although most people associate a “migraine” with a headache, the same underlying faulty nerves that cause this head pain can also affect those nerves that line our sinuses, teeth and ears. This hypersensitivity of the nervous system can interrupt the normal way that we see the world, maintain our balance, hear, smell and taste. This problem may be affecting other parts of the brain that control our body temperature and our mood, our ability to sleep, to think and to remember. It may be the same neuropathy that causes fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, cyclic vomiting. Think of this problem as a malfunctioning electrical relay switch. The information from sensory nerves is being distorted, or overly amplified, on its way to the brain. That neural error may be an inherited defect which comes and goes throughout life depending on changing factors, such as hormonal shifts. Unfortunately, we cannot be sure of this explanation because this theory has not been widely considered among physicians and research of the nervous system is challenging and has not been well-funded.

October is National Physical Therapy Month—catch this highlight from our February 2024 podcast episode on using physical therapy as a migraine treatment! In the full episode of Spotlight On Migraine, Sam Kelokates, PT, DPT explains how physical therapy can be an option for people living with migraine, physical therapy techniques, potential benefits, and how to get started. Read or watch the podcast: https://lnkd.in/eraNqVJC Transcript 👇 You know, we're not going to get the benefits of the physical therapy if we're not communicating on what's working for you and what's not, especially with migraine. Because some of our treatments might actually make you feel worse at that time or the day or two later, we need to talk about, okay, is this you just didn't have a good response to that particular intervention? Is it everything we're doing is irritating your condition, and do we really need to work together to modify what we're doing, or is it, no, I think that's just an outlier, let's try it a few more times and make some changes here and there to make sure we're not constantly triggering attacks with interventions.

September is World Sinus Health Awareness Month! Have you heard of sinus migraine? It is linked to the trigeminal and autonomic nervous systems. The first branch of the trigeminal nerve is responsible for the head pain that occurs with migraine, while the second branch connects to sinus sensors, causing pressure and pain that mimics sinusitis symptoms. 🧠 Note: Although not officially recognized by the International Classification of Headache Disorders 3rd edition, this hypothesis is explored by AMD President Dr. Fredrick Godley and other otolaryngologists. 📚 Learn more about this topic in our medically reviewed explainer video at https://lnkd.in/emDjHjVw Learn about Sinus Health Awareness Month at https://lnkd.in/efUB6efG
