❤️100 YEARS ❤️ Last weekend at the Big House, U-M hosted the Ann Arbor-Jackson Heart Ball, celebrating a century of lifesaving work by the American Heart Association. Frankel CVC director Dr. Kim Eagle chaired the event, which celebrated survivors and fundraised for groundbreaking research and education. “This collaboration is vital for improved prevention, earlier diagnosis and more effective treatments for heart disease and stroke,” Eagle said. “Thanks to the tremendous generosity of volunteers and donors from our SE Michigan region, the event raised more than $1 million!”

Joshua Spears was in the middle of a virtual work presentation when he suddenly felt something was wrong, telling the people watching he needed to leave to call 911. The series of events that followed - including being airlifted to U-M Health for an emergency open-heart operation due to a sudden aortic dissection - are a blur. But a reunion with his U-M Survival Flight nurses helped fill in the gaps of his journey. “Coming back here ... and getting a chance to say thank you — it’s been a form of therapy for me,” said the father of three. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be out here so I could get a chance to thank them all for saving my life, and helping my kids have a dad and my wife have a husband. I just am eternally thankful.” His story: michmed.org/5kQ3R
