For the second straight year, a group of human resources employees from the Michigan Civil Service Commission (MCSC) joined Habitat for Humanity for a day of volunteering in the Lansing community, working together to help put a local family in their forever-home.    Last year, the volunteer group helped paint, lay flooring, install cabinetry and countertops, and more. This year, the home was not quite as far along in the renovation process, so the MCSC volunteers lent some elbow grease to demolition day efforts. Old doors and framing were taken down, carpeting was pulled and removed, the basement was emptied, and outside the home, teams worked on ripping out old decking and clearing out trees and shrubs to make way for landscaping.   Work is expected to be completed early next year, with the excited family looking forward to moving in. The home, built in 1919, featured design elements from the era that the Habitat team will be highlighting during the renovations.   “It felt good to work on such a worthwhile project. Even though we spent the day on demo, I love the fact that Habitat is keeping some of the original woodwork inside the home from that era,” according to Kurt Weiss (Exec. Office).   Charisse Blanks (Career Services), MCSC Engagement Team co-chair, added, “Despite the rainy start to our day, I was very pleased to see all of the warm smiles from our MCSC colleagues! It was really nice to place names with faces and to meet people who traveled from as far as Grand Rapids and Flint to work together on this home build for a great cause. I feel a great sense of pride knowing that our team delivered a lot of effort and plenty of hard work, to make a difference for a local family.”   With a second annual day of volunteering under their belts, the MCSC Engagement Team is looking forward to teaming up with Habitat for Humanity again next year and are looking at additional opportunities to get out and volunteer in the community this year as well!
