If you've asked me about work lately, you've heard about a Zoning Atlas. :) It's a brand new tool to bring land use laws, especially around housing, into the sunshine so we can ALL understand how they're working. This Traverse City Record-Eagle article describes how forward-thinking problem-solvers at Housing North and in Northern Michigan see it helping developers and governments alike understand the barriers that are preventing the housing Michigan needs. (Unpaywalled link is from Yahoo.) Is there a Zoning Atlas already in Michigan? Is anyone else in the country doing this? Yes and yes! THESE are questions that will be answered when the Michigan Association of Planning, with Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning, University of Michigan, Housing Next, and Michigan Economic Development Corporation, unveils the findings of the pilot project that makes the Grand Traverse County work possible: The Grand Rapids Area Zoning Atlas covering Kent, Muskegon, and Ottawa counties.

"In April 2024, The City of Grand Rapids unanimously passed a zoning package to help increase the growing community's housing supply." The following American Planning Association Blog post covers an article originally published in the Michigan Association of Planning periodical, "Michigan Planner." "Since the 2002 master plan, Grand Rapids has invested more than $7 billion in construction in the city. Efforts like eliminating single-family zoning and studies of individual neighborhood needs have now positioned Grand Rapids for bolder housing reforms with a lower risk of gentrification or displacement of neighborhoods." We at CWA and CES understand how important real qualitative data can be when working on all urban planning solutions. Studies can point to evidence that support their findings however, when it comes to every day life, it is just as important to review actual examples of how well the implementation of learned policies worked. This is why we'd like to share the following information surrounding the Michigan Association of Planning's Zoning reform references and solutions. Specifically the "Zoning Reform Stories and Studies Toolkit that covers how planning staff, planning commissioners, municipal managers, zoning administrators, and even an elected official or two from 22 communities sat down with MAP and talked frankly, seriously, and technically about housing in their communities." The School of Planning, Design and Construction is pleased to announce that two Practicum Projects - a part of the Master of Urban and Regional Planning degree program - won the Michigan Association of Planning, 2024 Planning Excellence Award for Outstanding Student Project. The projects are the, "Ladybug Sustainable Community," project and the, "Morningside Housing Revitalization Strategy." The Ladybug Sustainable Community project in Lansing, Michigan, is a pioneering initiative aimed at creating an inclusive, environmentally sensitive urban agri-community.
