It’s hard to believe Joseph joined the firm only a YEAR ago because he has fit in seamlessly. Despite his Florida roots, this guy has adapted to the PNW weather, culture and lifestyle by enjoying the water, mountains, beautiful vistas and vibrant social scene of Seattle (though often with a jacket ON because…”it’s cold here!”). He’s a smart guy and clients will appreciate his technical expertise combined with a super warm personality. He might also get the award for living closest to the office setting a new gold standard for dedication. We appreciate you, Joseph, and are so glad to have you on our team!

  • What Are Deferred Compensation Plans? Deferred compensation plans look a bit different from the 401(k) you may already be familiar with. Like a 401(k), you can defer compensation into the plan and defer taxes on any earnings until you make withdrawals in the future. You can also establish beneficiaries for your deferred compensation. However, unlike 401(k) plans, the IRS doesn’t limit how much income you can defer each year. • If you’re an executive or a highly compensated employee looking to maximize your retirement savings and minimize tax liabilities, understanding how deferred compensation plans can work for you is crucial. You might notice a different option in your benefits plan beyond the usual 401(k). Some employers also offer Section 409A nonqualified deferred compensation plans to high earners, which have their own mix of rules, regulations, and potential drawbacks to navigate. However, when you’re earning income in the hundreds of thousands, it’s important to consider every option for saving on taxes and setting aside a larger nest egg for retirement. Contributing to the usual array of IRAs and 401(k)s might not be enough to see you through your golden years, and tools like deferred compensation plans could help you bridge the gap to early retirement. • Happy FIRST year, Charlie! He distinguished himself quickly as an avid sports fan and like-minded Huskies fans flocked to Charlie's desk to discuss the latest happenings in UW sports. Even non-Huskies fans are fans of Charlie. His easy-going and fun demeanor can be disarming when you realize how smart and dedicated he is to educating and helping his clients achieve their financial goals. He grew up nearby on the Olympic Peninsula and enjoys golf and family events in his free time. He has fondly become known as "Uncle Charlie" to many of the Merriman dogs in need of some weekend pet-sitting. We've got your number, Charlie! Glad you are very much a part of our team!
