On August 20, the Merakey Education Center in Mount Pleasant, PA held an Open House to formally introduce themselves to the community. The event was attended by local leaders, government officials, and members of the local community. Since the school opened in 2020, during COVID, this year was the first real opportunity to open their doors to show attendees what they do, share what they believe, and proudly tell the story of their students. The Children and Families Services Division is very proud of the leadership at this Education Center as well as the teachers and staff who work so hard every day to ensure each student learns and grows into their best selves!

Suzanne, a peer in services, shared a “personal medicine” that she likes to do that helps when she feels anxious: crafting – specifically making gnomes! Lori Adams, a Certified Peer Specialist (CPS), supported Suzanne and improved her confidence to present at the first CPS Personal Medicine Sharing Workshop. Suzanne has been crafting for years and wanted to share her talents with others by showing them how to make gnomes. She explained to the group how crafting assists her in maintaining her overall wellness. Participants learned a new skill and created décor for themselves or to give to someone in their life. The team thanks Suzanne for being the first peer to kick-off this event and they look forward to the next workshop in October.

Slippery Rock Program Aide Kait Benson took a small group for Community Participation at the OH WOW! Children's Center for Science & Technology in Youngstown, OH. Oh Wow! is a center that encourages hands-on activities with a focus on STEM learning. The group had a great time learning about weather and being weather forecasters for a day. They also did driving simulations and other science activities. It was a great day filled with learning and fun.

In honor of National Dog Day on August 26, Broadhead Smart Home is excited to highlight Floyd's service dog, Popcorn. Popcorn has lived with Floyd at the Brodhead Smart Home since 2021. Recently, Popcorn visited Beaver Valley Mall with Floyd and his friends. Floyd's dream has always been to own a dog of his own and through the help of Merakey AVS staff, Canine Service Pals, and Floyd himself, he's living his dream! 🐶

Director, Outreach Programs at Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA)

While viewing video footage in my office, I witnessed a scene that perfectly captures the spirit of our Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) SCOPE team. With an escalator out of service, a mother with three young children faced the challenge of navigating steep stairs. Without hesitation, Joe LaRosa, one of our Merakey outreach workers, stepped in to help. He carried the stroller up four flights of stairs, both outside and inside the station. Joe’s quick thinking and genuine care prevented what could have been a serious incident. In a time when negative stories often dominate, it's essential to highlight such acts of kindness. Joe’s actions truly reflect SEPTA’s commitment to a safe and welcoming environment.
