It's true! You don’t need students to spend lots of time practicing rhyming to support their word recognition. Instead, teach phonemic awareness. You can use Elkonin boxes to make it concrete - and connect letters to sounds as soon as possible. 🌟 Check out the links below for a podcast explaining this and links to printable Elkonin boxes AND our book where this is explained in more detail! 🌟 Here are a few resources for using Elkonin Boxes ➡️ 🎧 Podcast episode with Reading Above the Fray author Julia Lindsey https://lnkd.in/eb8CcgSq 📦 Printable Elkonin Boxes from Class Playground https://lnkd.in/exmJ2GyH 📚 Our book, The Literacy 50 - Chapter 1 is ALL about Phonemic Awareness! https://lnkd.in/e4WXZFx9 Here are steps for using Elkonin Boxes: 1. Tell students they will push one token into a box for each sound they hear in a word. 2. Pronounce the word slowly to emphasize each phoneme. 3. Have students repeat the word. 4. Ask: "What is the first sound you hear?" 5. Have students move a token into the first box to represent the sound. 6. Continue with the remaining sounds. Remember, you want students to hear the sounds in each word, not the letters. For example, if the word is CHIP, /ch/ is one sound, so it gets one token in one space, even though it's represented by two letters. 🤯 ⭐️ #scienceofreading #reading #teaching #phonemicawareness #teachertools

Expect Every Child to Learn to Read 😍 The National Institute of Health (NIH) states that nearly all children have the cognitive capacity to learn to read. Only about 5% have severe impairments that hinder reading acquisition. With 95% of students capable of reading, we must reject failure as an option in our classrooms. If students are not responding to our instruction, we need to reevaluate and adjust our teaching methods. 📖 Read the rest of this blog post "Dear Dear Balanced Literacy Teacher: A Heartfelt Plea for Change" by Missy Purcell https://lnkd.in/eMcRXEiR
