We are mobilizing the nation’s health professionals for equitable climate solutions. Annual Meeting | Feb. 11-13, 2024
About us
Climate change is the greatest public health crisis of the 21st century. As consistently trusted messengers to the public, health professionals have a crucial role to play in raising public awareness of the health threat posed by climate change and catalyzing action. The Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health organizes major medical societies representing over 1 million physicians and health professionals to carry three simple messages: 1. Climate change is harming Americans today, with people of color and communities living in poverty experiencing greater harm. 2. The way to slow or stop these harms is to decrease the use of fossil fuels and increase energy efficiency and the use of clean energy sources. 3. These changes in energy choices will improve the quality of our air and water and bring immediate health benefits.

Nearly half a million school buses bring over 24 million K-12 students to and from school across the U.S. Most of them still run on diesel, putting children's health at risk and contributing to planet-warming pollution. But the good news is that the country is seeing promising growth in the number of electric school buses. As of June 2024, the U.S. fleet has grown to include 12,174 committed electric school buses — a 19-fold increase over the last five years. These cleaner alternatives bring numerous benefits to students, schools, and local communities, including: 💨 Cleaner air and fewer health risks 🌎 Less planet-warming pollution 💰 Cost savings 💪 Climate resilience Learn more in this new package from Climate Central, Inc. ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/gnctHRed

As climate change and environmental degradation continue to threaten our communities, the healthcare sector must take action. The urgency of this crisis and healthcare's significant contribution to it leaves no room for decades-long delays. A recent perspective in the Journal of Hospital Medicine highlights that while several U.S. healthcare delivery organizations have initiated decarbonization efforts, many lack rigorous measurement and data transparency, making it challenging to assess true progress. Applying insights and lessons from the patient safety movement can help accelerate healthcare decarbonization and evidence-based environmental sustainability initiatives. #Healthcare #ClimateChange #Sustainability #Decarbonization #PatientSafety #EnvironmentalHealth #ClimateIsHealth

Recent research shows that smoke from wildfires — which are becoming more frequent and severe because of climate change — significantly increases the risk of cognitive decline and dementia in older adults. In a new op-ed, Dr. C. Freeman, a 2024 Climate & Health Equity Fellow with the Consortium, highlights the need for stronger public health strategies and preventive measures to tackle these risks and address the root causes of climate change. "Doing so will protect the cognitive health of older adults and build a healthier, more resilient future for everyone." Read Dr. Freeman’s op-ed below to learn more. Today is Children’s Environmental Health Day! All children deserve clean air, clean water, safer food and products, and healthy places in which to live, learn, and play. An estimated 34% of children's chronic illnesses and developmental challenges are caused by environmental factors. These harms disproportionately affect children in lower-income families as well as Black, Latino/a, Indigenous, and other children of color. Improving our children’s health depends on righting these environmental injustices. Together, we can build a healthier, safer, more equitable future for all children. As climate disasters escalate and uncertainty grows, an increasing number of young people are facing climate anxiety. In this new article, Dr. Rammy Assaf, a pediatric emergency medicine physician, sheds light on the growing psychosocial burden faced by young people, rooted in their anxiety over climate change. An international study shows that 59% of young people are very worried about climate change, with 45% expressing that it negatively impacts their daily lives. Adolescents, already navigating a mental health crisis exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, are now further burdened by environmental concerns about the planet’s future. While there is no easy solution to the dual crises that plague our climate and youth mental health, collective action that empowers young people is crucial. #ClimateAnxiety #MentalHealth #YouthEmpowerment #ClimateAction #Equity #NaturalDisasters #ClimateChange #ClimateIsHealth
