We are mobilizing the nation’s health professionals for equitable climate solutions. Annual Meeting | Feb. 11-13, 2024
About us
Climate change is the greatest public health crisis of the 21st century. As consistently trusted messengers to the public, health professionals have a crucial role to play in raising public awareness of the health threat posed by climate change and catalyzing action. The Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health organizes major medical societies representing over 1 million physicians and health professionals to carry three simple messages: 1. Climate change is harming Americans today, with people of color and communities living in poverty experiencing greater harm. 2. The way to slow or stop these harms is to decrease the use of fossil fuels and increase energy efficiency and the use of clean energy sources. 3. These changes in energy choices will improve the quality of our air and water and bring immediate health benefits.

As summer heat persists, many states in the South and Southeast, including Florida, Georgia, and Texas, remain under intense heat warnings. This extreme heat is not only uncomfortable but also poses serious dangers, especially for those with chronic health conditions. “People who have chronic health conditions are going to be more susceptible, particularly when you get sustained high-heat, high-humidity days.” For individuals with diabetes, heart disease, or kidney disease, managing body temperature becomes increasingly critical, heightening the risk of severe health issues. In the South and Southeast, where chronic diseases are more prevalent, these risks are compounded. CDC data reveals that older adults in these regions face the highest rates of heart failure hospitalizations. With 2023 recorded as the hottest year ever and 2024 expected to surpass it, the intersection of extreme heat and health risks is a pressing issue. It’s time to raise awareness and advocate for solutions that protect our most vulnerable populations. Immediate climate action is crucial to address and mitigate these risks effectively. #ClimateAction #ExtremeHeat #HealthRisks #ClimateMitigation #PublicHealth #Heatwaves #ExtremeHeat #ChronicIllness #HeartHealth #ClimateIsHealth

As climate change intensifies, so do its impacts on communities—forcing thousands to relocate and creating significant challenges for public health and well-being. The aftermath of Hurricane Laura in Lake Charles, Louisiana, underscores this urgent issue. Four years after the storm, the city is still grappling with the displacement of thousands of residents, many of whom may never return. This has far-reaching implications not only for community cohesion but also for access to healthcare and essential services. The U.S. Census is struggling to keep pace with these changes, leaving communities like Lake Charles without the accurate data needed to allocate resources effectively. As healthcare professionals, we know that accurate population data is essential for planning and delivering services, particularly in disaster-stricken areas. #ClimateHealth #Displacement #PublicHealth #Resilience #ClimateChange #Health #Disasters #NaturalDisasters #Hurricanes #ClimateIsHealth #Census

Extreme heat is increasingly jeopardizing children's health. A recent review in the Journal of Climate Change and Health reveals troubling links between rising temperatures and severe health outcomes for children, including preterm births, low birth weight, and exacerbated asthma. Research indicates that extreme heat during pregnancy is associated with a 16% increase in preterm births and a 31% increase in low birth weight. Heatwaves also drive up emergency visits for conditions like dehydration, disproportionately affecting children from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. As heatwaves become more frequent, the risks extend to increased respiratory issues and, in some cases, higher mortality rates among young children. This growing threat underscores the urgent need for targeted mitigation and adaptation measures—greener play areas, improved heat warning systems, and better school environments are crucial. #ClimateChange #ChildrensHealth #ExtremeHeat #PublicHealth #Health #Heat #Asthma #Pregnancy #ClimateIsHealth

Health professionals are on the front lines of climate change, and the University of Colorado School of Medicine’s Diploma in Climate Medicine is equipping them to lead. Participants from across the U.S. explore the intersection of climate science and health, diving deep into issues like air quality, extreme heat, and mosquito-borne diseases. The program not only educates but empowers health leaders to bring this knowledge back to their communities, advancing the climate health movement. “The people who are being trained here today, they are helping to spread that movement back to their communities because there are still lots of communities that don't have any health professionals who are focused in this way," says Ed Maibach, director of the Center for Climate Change Communication, George Mason University and a Climate Diploma faculty member. According to a new study, the emissions from asthma and COPD inhalers covered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2022 could power all the homes in a city the size of Milwaukee for an entire year While there are environmentally friendly alternatives, they tend to be prescribed less and are disproportionately costly. Making the switch on a large scale would require physician education and policy change. "[F]or everything we do in medicine — whether it’s in the OR, it’s in anesthesia — that we start to think about the carbon footprint of health care, because a lot of people are not having those discussions." Under the Inflation Reduction Act, CMS could also negotiate better prices for environmentally friendly inhalers, providing an incentive for them to be prescribed more. From extreme heat to air pollution, climate change is intensifying risks for pregnant patients. However, many don't recognize the full scope of climate-related health risks during pregnancy. In a new #ClimateCheckup, Dr. Ruben Alvero highlights the crucial need for health professionals to get educated on these impacts and better guide their patients on ways to protect themselves. "As healthcare professionals, we garner much respect, and it is time we lift up our voices to preserve our communities and protect them from the impact of this public health emergency."
