The Mediterranean & Black Sea Security Practitioners’ Network

About us

MEDEA is an EU funded Coordination and Support Action project the scope of which is to establish and further develop a regional Network of practitioners and other security related actors in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea region. MEDEA project groups the practitioners into 4 thematic communities (TCPs – Thematic Communities of Practitioners): - TCP1: Managing of migration flows and asylum seekers - TCP2: Border management and surveillance - TCP3: Fight against cross-border crime and terrorism - TCP4: Manage natural hazards and technological accidents The aim of MEDEA is to engage a critical mass of security practitioners and actors including first aid responders, border guards, national police, civil protection teams, humanitarian workers, defence entities and other interested stakeholders in efficient cooperation with cross-discipline entities from other countries. The expected result would be the effective response to all security threats common to the Mediterranean and Black Sea region. The requirements from all four communities will be featured as inputs (regional operational needs) in the Mediterranean and Black Sea Security Research and Innovation Agenda (MSRIA).

📜 Our fourth policy brief is out! 4️⃣ " Upstream, Horizontal, And Downstream Policy Recommendations" 🔸 After more than five years of activity, the Mediterranean & Black Sea Practitioners’ Network & Capacity Building for Effective Response to Emerging Security Challenges has singled out a number of key areas for policy intervention. These range from overarching national and EU-wide security policies and security research policy (Upstream), to the multinational, multi-sectoral, and cross-disciplinary ecosystem of security research (Horizontal), and not least to the engagement with and adoption by public and private emergency responders and crisis managers on the ground (Downstream). 🔹 The challenge of matching the evolving threat landscape of the EU with the security culture and capabilities needed for preparedness and response is an ongoing one, and MEDEA has delivered actionable recommendations to either support better and wider implementation of identified “good practices”, or help “change the game” towards practices which are “fitter-for-purpose”. ➡ You can download and read the full policy brief here: https://lnkd.in/dkzyMsDX #MEDEAProjectEU #policybrief #EUSecurityResearch #projects

💡 Last but not least, here is the final newsletter of the MEDEA Project: ➡ https://lnkd.in/durneQ53 🔸 MEDEA has thus achieved its objectives and delivered its expected results, contributing to the enhancement of the security domain in the Mediterranean and Black Sea region, and to the improvement of resilience for societies in the EU at large. 🔹 It has also created a lasting network of practitioners and other stakeholders, as well as a strong link between the demand and the supply side of innovation, fostering further collaboration and bridging capability gaps with solutions. 🔸 However, all achievements aside, MEDEA also created a family among the partners and countries of the consortium, with common values and vision for the future. #MEDEAProjectEU #EUResearch #projects #euproject #newsletter

💡 This is worth reading! We would like to share a very important activity that GUCI has been developing. ➡ Guardia Civil has been working with the association "A21" in Spain for several years, specifically in the area of combating human trafficking crimes. The A21 Campaign is a non-profit global organisation dedicated to fighting human trafficking and other issues. ℹ As a result of their collaboration, the “Passport to indicators of trafficking” information brochure was developed. It targets the prevention of human trafficking, with a specific emphasis on forced labor. This document has been translated into nine languages: Spanish, English, French, Arabic, Romanian, Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian and Mandarin Chinese. The content is presented in a clear, concise language to provide information and indicators on exploitation and forced labor trafficking. The "passport" is distributed at strategic locations where victims or potential victims may be present, including borders. It has also been circulated to select GUCI units. ❕ This “passport” gains further importance when, at the outset of the conflict in Ukraine, GUCI distributes it - through liaison officers - at all Ukrainian borders to prevent the recruitment of vulnerable people escaping the war, predominantly women and children, by smuggling networks.   ❗ The dissemination of indicators on trafficking is fundamental, for example, for the detection of this crime, which would increase the capacity of LEAs such as GUCI to identify possible victims; for the general public, who could bring it to the attention of the authorities; and even for the victims, who in many cases are unaware that they are victims.   It is believed that the actions described above, in addition to preventing and increasing the capacity to detect trafficking, demonstrate GUCI's commitment to the protection of vulnerable groups and the fight against trafficking.   📄 The passport can be downloaded from the association's website in Spain (https://lnkd.in/g6bs5YS5), under the tab "Trata de seres humanos".   The development of this "passport", as well as the collaboration, has been publicised on corporate social networks and in the Spanish press.
