74 years ago today, Recipient Melvin Handrich went above and beyond the call of duty, demonstrating acts of sacrifice for which he would later be awarded the Medal of Honor. Faced with overwhelming enemy forces, Recipient Handrich repeatedly placed himself in mortal danger to defend his position. For eight grueling hours, he directed artillery and mortar fire, often while under close-range attack. Even after being severely wounded, he refused medical attention, continuing to fight and inspire his men. Tasked with a perilous mission to neutralize a formidable enemy position, Recipient Connor led his platoon through a harrowing ordeal. Though he suffered multiple severe wounds, his unwavering courage and determination inspired his men to press on. Today is the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s 66th birthday! On August 14, 1958, President Dwight Eisenhower signed the Congressional Charter for the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. Though the Society’s mission and scope has expanded, the Charter is still our guiding light.
