The McPherson Board of Public Utilities is a public service institution meaning it is essentially owned by its customers. We want our customers to reap the benefits of having a public utility by helping them understand the advantages- the full attention to customer service, high reliability, attractive rates, and COMMITMENT to McPherson and local decision-making. One of these commitments is to community education and safety. Every year, our lineworkers provide electrical safety demonstrations to 3rd graders in the area. Last week, three linemen attended all six area grade schools to provide life-saving information regarding staying safe around electricity. Also, our employees hold an annual water festival educating area 4th graders on where their water comes from and how to conserve and protect our precious water sources, that event will take place on October 25th. We expect 420 people, including students, teachers, helpers, and guides, to attend that event! #PublicPowerWeek #GoMcPherson

HAPPY PUBLIC POWER WEEK! This week we celebrate our forward-thinking forefathers' decision to get together to form the McPherson Board of Public Utilities in 1969! Public Power has numerous advantages. However, central is the fact that the community has a voice in the decisions made by the utility so all the benefits produced by public power—including affordable energy costs, better service, better environmental outcomes, and improvements to the local community are accrued by all the local ratepayers. Because of that decision 54 years ago, the McPherson businesses and community has flourished! #PublicPowerWeek #GoMcPherson

BPU General Manager, Josh Bedel's comments regarding a recent paper the SPP released pointing out the challenges facing the electrical grid.
A couple weeks ago the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), our Regional Transmission Organization (RTO), released a powerful paper labeled "Our Generational Challenge" detailing the operational challenges of the power grid. As the paper points out, the electric grid faces unprecedented risk where electrical generating supply is decreasing and electrical demand is increasing at an alarming rate. What does this mean for McPherson Board of Public Utilities? McPherson BPU is positioned well to take on these challenges. BPU's long-term Interconnection Agreement with Evergy dating back to 1972, allows the BPU to access energy and capacity from a diverse fuel source that includes coal, natural gas, and wind; while also allowing BPU to provide peaking capacity to support our local electric load and overall regional electric load. With this agreement, along with long-term planning and strong Board policies, McPherson BPU will continue to effectively manage this ongoing challenge. As a municipal utility, we're directly connected to our community stakeholders and will be here for them. I invite all readers to educated yourself on the generational challenges facing our regional and national electric grid.
