“The organization of the facility and site was designed to create a more civically engaging relationship with the community,” Mackenzie Design Director Thomas Peck told the Daily Journal of Commerce Oregon, “It will reinforce the presence of law enforcement and the public safety building as a resource for everyone in Molalla.” The new police station will be Molalla’s first dedicated police facility. It will also function as an emergency operations center to coordinate public safety crisis response activities. The project team includes Mackenzie, Interface Engineering, Inc., and P&C Construction. Thank you to Hilary Dorsey at the DJC for highlighting this exciting project in Molalla.

Mackenzie is on the design team for what will become the largest battery factory in the world. The Kansas City Star published this video about ongoing construction of Panasonic Energy of North America’s new battery plant in De Soto, Kansas. This state-of-the-art electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility will be Panasonic's first standalone EV battery manufacturing facility in the US. The facility, the largest economic development in Kansas's history, is expected to support 4,000 permanent employees and bring in $2.5 billion in yearly economic activity. Mackenzie, working as a design consultant for engineering firm SSOE Group, provided expertise in advanced tech and fast-track design. The Star reports the facility is on track to open in Spring 2025.
Exciting times in De Soto, KS! Check out the latest update from The Kansas City Star on our new factory. We're making incredible strides towards a greener, more sustainable future—right here in Kansas! Together, we're building the energy that changes the future.

Members of Mackenzie’s team attended the National Association of Japan-America Societies, Inc. (NAJAS) Annual Meeting in Portland last week. As co-host, Mackenzie Principal Josh McDowell introduced Ambassador Nina Hachigian, Special Representative for City and State Diplomacy, Subnational Diplomacy Unit at the U.S. Department of State. Mackenzie is a proud member and long-time supporter of the Japan-America Society of Oregon (JASO). Our roots in the Japanese American community date back to 1970 and our cofounder, sansei architect Eric Saito. Eric's legacy of contributing to our community continues today at Mackenzie. JASO is a member-based, volunteer-driven, non-profit organization established in 1907 to develop business and community by strengthening the US-Japan relationship. NAJAS is a private, nonprofit, non-partisan membership organization consisting of 39 independent Japan-America Societies located in the United States and Canada. NAJAS offers public affairs, business, cultural and educational programs about Japan and U.S.-Japan relations to the general public through their member Japan and Japan-America Societies.

Improvements at Gradin Community Sports Park are plowing forward. We stopped by recently to see what's going on beneath the surface. The City of Gresham is adding two new softball fields, two new soccer fields, and an amenity plaza. These upgrades have been funded through state and federal funding, completing the vision of the sports park that began more than two decades ago. Mackenzie’s Landscape Architecture team is leading the design team and contractor Paul Brothers Inc. is leading the construction work.

Mackenzie Associate Principal Brett Conway was recently appointed to two Washington State Building Code Council Technical Advisory Groups (TAGs). We asked him about these TAGs, how they fit into the Washington State code adoption process, and about building code more generally. "I enjoy figuring out what the code is speaking to and working to bring design ideas and the code together so that a project can get a permit and be constructed," Brett told us. Read the rest of what he had to say here:
