About us

Welcome to McKinley – Where Hope Illuminates Our Path! At McKinley, we are guided by the HUMAN values that resonate deeply within us. We are a team made up of compassionate individuals. We exemplify being HOPEFUL. We are UNDERSTANDING. We are MORAL, by treating everyone with respect. We are AWESOME, by recognizing the unique qualities in each person. We are NURTURING, to those in our communities who are in need of support or specialized care. Our organization believes in healing through connection. Our trauma-informed approach acknowledges the resilience within every individual, empowering them to harness the strength of their natural support systems. Originally founded as a residential facility for orphaned children over a century ago, we have grown and evolved into a multifaceted organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and families in our community. Mission: By inspiring hope, McKinley helps youth, families, adults and communities aspire to their highest potential through impactful services provided by a team of compassionate professionals fueled by our H.U.M.A.N. values. Our goal is healing, growing, and thriving together! We accomplish this by serving Southern California through multiple locations and a diverse range of programs, including Behavioral Health, Special Education, Foster Care and Adoptions, Residential Care, and a Shelter Program that reunites immigrant children with their families. Each of our programs embodies our unwavering commitment to building a brighter, more inclusive future. Side by side, we pave the way for transformation, one life at a time. We invite you to join us on our journey of hope, compassion, and transformation. Together, we can create a brighter future for our youth, families, and communities. World Suicide Prevention Day | National Suicide Prevention Month On September 10, we observe World Suicide Prevention Day to raise awareness, offer support to those who need it most, and remember the individuals and families affected by suicide. At McKinley, our commitment to mental health is at the core of everything we do, especially when it comes to supporting our youth, adults, and the community at large. Know the Warning Signs Recognizing the signs of mental health struggles is key to preventing suicide. While mental health conditions vary, there are some common behaviors and symptoms across different age groups: In Students and Youth: Changes in school performance Excessive worry or anxiety (e.g., avoiding bed or school) Hyperactivity or restlessness Frequent nightmares Aggression or disobedience Prolonged temper tantrums In Men: Extreme mood swings, including anger or irritability Withdrawal from social circles, family, or activities Changes in sleep patterns, such as insomnia or oversleeping Feelings of hopelessness, often masked behind substance use or workaholism In Women: Excessive sadness, fear, or anxiety Drastic changes in energy levels or fatigue Trouble concentrating or maintaining focus Disrupted eating or sleeping patterns Avoidance of social activities or increased isolation What to Do: It’s not always easy to distinguish between typical behavior and signs of mental illness, especially in children and adolescents. Being aware of these signs can help initiate conversations and connect people to the resources they need. This Suicide Prevention Month, let’s stay informed, be aware of the warning signs, and work together to offer support and compassion. By reaching out, listening, and seeking help, we can make a meaningful difference. If you or someone you know is struggling, don’t hesitate to seek support. You are not alone. Call or Text 988 for immediate help from a caring, skilled counselor.
