Healthcare News: A recent study from the University of Iowa suggests that high-dose intravenous vitamin C, when combined with chemotherapy, may improve survival rates for patients with late-stage metastatic pancreatic cancer. In this phase 2 trial, patients receiving 75 grams of vitamin C three times a week alongside chemotherapy experienced an increase in overall survival from eight to sixteen months, and progression-free survival from four to six months. Important Update for Physicians Using 503B Compounded Medications As a physician, you rely on 503B outsourcing facilities to provide high-quality compounded medications for your patients. However, not all 503B compounders are following the latest FDA regulations, which could put patient care at risk. The FDA recently changed its policies on which bulk drug substances can be legally compounded under Section 503B of the FDCA. Effective January 7, 2025, any newly nominated bulk drug substances will NOT be allowed for compounding until fully approved—a process that can take years. Additionally, previously nominated substances that did not meet FDA’s safety and quality standards are no longer permitted for compounding. 💡 What This Means for You: ✔️ If you're purchasing compounded drugs, make sure your 503B provider is compliant with these new rules. ✔️ Using compounded drugs made with substances that are no longer authorized could put your practice at risk. ✔️ Patient access to critical medications depends on working with a 503B facility that prioritizes regulatory compliance.
