As we approach COP29, global leaders are facing a critical question. How can we spark private sector action, moving beyond pledges to demonstrable progress? In a recent PJMF-hosted roundtable, PJMF partners Open Supply Hub and Climate TRACE set out to answer this very question, highlighting the critical roles of open source data, cross-industry collaboration, and participatory incentives for businesses across the globe. Gathering experts from across the sustainability space, the two shared insights on their efforts to build a unified dataset combining OS Hub’s world-leading global database of 745,000 factories and production sites with regularly updated, site-specific emissions estimates from Climate TRACE. The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation believes that effective tech philanthropy requires a nuanced understanding of AI’s potential, alongside a commitment to ethical, inclusive development. This week, philanthropic leaders across the country joined us for #FundAI – a two-day in-person convening designed to help the philanthropic sector gain the strategic perspective, technical knowledge, and practical tools necessary to fund #AI for social impact. Our collaborative efforts with Google.org, the GitLab Foundation, and Fast Forward brought together over 100 philanthropic groups eager to delve into AI’s potential to drive progress across sectors and communities across the globe. We came away from our conversations hopeful that our learning agenda will help pave the way for informed evaluation of funding tech for good initiatives – in service of creating a human-centered, tech-enabled future. Breaking down barriers so that women can break through in tech | Founder, Break Through Tech | Former CIO at Verizon
Kudos to this gathering and a shout out to Vilas Dhar and Gwyneth Gaul, CAP® and the other philanthropists at this event. Can’t think of a more important focus for tech-related philanthropy right now than AI - whether we are focused on the enormous promise of AI to lift up society and solve previously unsolvable problems - or focused on avoiding the potential perils of AI to endanger those most vulnerable in our society - it is going to take investment and innovation to ensure that the BILLIONS of dollars being spent right now in the advancement of this technology doesn’t blow up in our faces because we didn’t have the right people in the room asking the hard questions and we weren’t focused on the most important challenges. There are many organizations like Break Through Tech willing to do the hard work and heavy lifting to innovate at scale - and these philanthropists - and the corporate CSR groups alongside them - are the fuel that enable our engines to accelerate progress that benefits ALL of us. Thank you thank you thank you. The CEO of the Atlantic Nicholas Thompson and the CEO of the The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, Vilas Dhar kicking off Fund.AI, our philanthropy + AI conference a partnership of GitLab Foundation Google and The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation. Two days focused on helping nearly 150 grantmakers build technical awareness and capacity to thoughtfully make grants which use technology to advance positive outcomes. Like the internet revolution before, AI will shape our world in ways we are just starting to dream of… and we’re working to help civil society institutions and nonprofits bend the curve of its application to more just, equitable and positive use cases. It’s been so fun bringing this event to life with Nick Cain Brigitte Hoyer Gosselink Adam Goldfarb and the team at Fast Forward!

📣 Free event: Join the Data Empowerment Fund online on 21 November I’m excited to be hosting an online event for the Data Empowerment Fund on 21 November 2024, in partnership with the Open Data Institute. Data empowerment creates opportunities for us to shape the systems of data collection, use and sharing that affect our lives. This event will showcase the role data empowerment is playing - right now - in tackling some of the world’s most pressing challenges, from ensuring fair work and tackling the climate crisis to governing artificial intelligence. We’ve put together a variety of lightning talks, panels and other sessions, including: ⏩ Exposing the human labour in data and AI supply chains. ⏩ Filling the data gaps and using ‘counter data’ to advocate for change. ⏩ Creating and sustaining data communities. You’ll hear from the brilliant initiatives the Data Empowerment Fund is working with, as well as other experts working on topics such as data sovereignty and AI localism. Inspiring vision from Vilas Dhar of The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation in conversation with Lance Pierce at #nethope2024: “So often the conversation is about how we can use tech to do things better. But when I talk to visionary adopters, they ask, how do I use technology to do better things? We have plenty of vendors and talent and consulting. What we don’t have is a way to create the behavioral capacity to reimagine.” How do we stop talking about funding and supporting tech, and instead talk about how to fund and support vision? Thanks to NetHope for making these conversations possible!

Philanthropy has a powerful role to play in shaping AI for good. By putting human values front and center, civil society can guide emerging tech to better serve communities and drive meaningful change. As AI continues to evolve, the opportunity to ensure it benefits everyone has never been more important. Joining Giving Done Right hosts Phil Buchanan and Grace Nicolette, PJMF President Vilas Dhar explains that now is the time for philanthropies to step in and ensure that AI is developed with human needs and priorities at its core. We can create a future where AI serves humanity in the ways we need it most – with human-centered design being the key driver of decision-making. Leaders of philanthropic institutions are grappling with an urgent question — how can we ensure that emerging technologies advance our shared purpose and improve the lives of the communities we serve? Meanwhile, a critical funding gap persists for nonprofits deploying AI, machine learning, and other tech-enabled approaches to tackle major societal challenges. To unlock resources for this critical work, grantmakers need the right tools, knowledge, and community of practice to thoroughly evaluate and champion proposals that involve data science, AI, and technology product development. Next week, in partnership with Google.org, the GitLab Foundation, and Fast Forward, PJMF aims to help close that gap by convening Fund.AI — a two-day in-person peer learning exchange where grantmakers will learn directly from each other, and from the builders of nonprofit tech, on how great technology products are built and how we can help the ecosystem grow. Have ideas for what funders should know about nonprofit tech? Let us know in the comments! Stay connected with us at mcgovern.org and The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation. #FundAI #TechForGood #AI
