In the United States, before flying any aircraft commercially, there are key regulatory achievements that a company must satisfy. Whether you’re a large commercial airliner carrying hundreds of passengers or a small drone carrying a five-pound package, the Federal Aviation Administration requires approvals for both manned and unmanned aviation. In both manned and unmanned aviation, there are typically two major categories of approval required: equipment and operational approvals. The equipment approval ensures that the aircraft and its associated support equipment are safe for flight. Equally important for advanced operations is how the equipment will be operated to safely complete the intended operations. Our VP of Regulatory Strategy, Jim O'Sullivan, provides background into this journey. #Drones #DroneDelivery #Innovation #Regulation #FAA

About us
Matternet is the leading developer of commercial drone delivery systems for urban and suburban environments. The company ships the Matternet M2 drone and Matternet Software Platform and operates its technology directly for customers or in partnership with logistics organizations, such as UPS. In 2017, Matternet became the first company in the world to be authorized for commercial Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations of drone logistics networks over cities in Switzerland. In 2019, Matternet and UPS partnered to launch drone delivery services in the U.S. and together started the first revenue drone delivery operations in the U.S. In 2022, Matternet M2 became the first drone delivery system to achieve standard Type Certification and Production Certification by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the U.S. To date, Matternet technology has enabled over 20,000 commercial flights.

Today, we’re thrilled to announce that Matternet has received the first Light UAS Operator Certificate from the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation Switzerland FOCA! This certificate enables Matternet to self-authorize new operations within Switzerland and the Federal State of Berlin, while also accelerating the approval process for similar operations throughout the European Union. Our Founder and CEO Andreas Raptopoulos said: “We are excited about this certification, which transforms our ability to expand drone delivery operations across Europe. Our close collaboration with FOCA has been instrumental in achieving this milestone. With the power to self-authorize routes, we can rapidly grow our networks and deliver essential goods to hospitals and directly to people's homes.” This achievement is a testament to the hard work of our team and our ongoing collaboration with Swiss aviation authorities. Together, we’re redefining what's possible in autonomous aerial logistics, paving the way for a more efficient, sustainable, and connected future. Stay tuned as we continue to push the boundaries of drone innovation. https://lnkd.in/eB252eJb #Matternet #DroneDelivery #Drones #Aviation #Innovation #SwissAviation

In 2014, we partnered with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Papua New Guinea to test whether drones could speed up the collection of Tuberculosis diagnostics in remote areas. Rain-damaged roads were a major obstacle, hindering the transport of critical medical supplies to treat the Tuberculosis epidemic. Drones proved essential in overcoming these challenges, enhancing diagnostic capabilities and accelerating treatment delivery. In 2016, in Lilongwe, Malawi, we partnered with the Government of Malawi and UNICEF to explore how drones could enhance the efficiency of HIV testing. With other transportation methods it would take about 11 days for samples to reach a lab for testing and up to 8 weeks for patients to receive results, causing delayed access to life saving therapies. By using drone technology, we aim to significantly reduce these delays and improve healthcare access and outcomes. In 2014, we teamed up with the Government of Bhutan and the World Health Organization to explore the feasibility of using low-cost drones for delivering medicine and medical supplies to remote clinics in the Himalayan nation. With just 0.3 physicians per 1,000 people in Bhutan's isolated mountain regions, our goal was to connect main hospitals with rural communities using drones, delivering medicine over ten times faster than by road. This pilot was a key step in proving the potential of drone delivery in challenging terrains. Find out more at https://lnkd.in/e_nx5SXr
