Honoring Juneteenth To advance as a more inclusive society, it’s imperative we look back in celebration of the landmark moments that are part of our heritage, reflecting upon past societal wins and collective wrongs, educating on the impact felt today, and making room for understanding and growth. Today, June 19th, marks the 159th anniversary of Juneteenth—the oldest known commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. Celebrating the Juneteenth holiday alone is not enough to create fundamental change, but it can foster education and awareness and propel us to consider how we create truly inclusive and equitable cultures. It serves as a moment of reflection, as well as celebration, and a moment to consider the work ahead that is needed to build equitable and inclusive cultures for our Black colleagues. it’s Black history month in the u.s. and canada! 🙌🏾 here are a few content/editorial reminders i have for the month (and beyond): 👉🏾 capitalize the b in ✨Black✨ when referring to Black people—also, do not refer to us as ✨Blacks✨ 👉🏾 remember that many Black people do not identify as ‘african-american’ so when you’re talking about Black folx globally, those terms are not interchangeable 👉🏾 bhm is a celebration of culture—all of your Black culture focused content doesn’t need to be about the oppression of Black people 👉🏾 if your brand wants to tap in to bhm as a cultural moment, collaborate with Black creators and influencers to do so—and pay them fairly and ✨on time✨ 👉🏾 every Black creator or influencer isn’t a de&i expert or social justice warrior—sometimes we just want to create content about the sh*t we enjoy doing 👉🏾 you don’t have to talk about Black history month if it doesn’t make sense for your brand that’s it! happy creating (and celebrating). 🧠💡
