#Spotlight Louis Amico MassDOT Construction Inspector II “I've been working for the state for 19 years now, starting out as a High Voltage Electrician with the Turnpike. Currently, I hold the position of Construction Inspector II. My main role involves overseeing both in-house and contract personnel for the maintenance and upgrades of all traffic signal locations in District 6. This job came about due to the merger between MassDOT and the Turnpike, where they needed signal electricians for the new District 6. With my previous experience working for the city of Lynn, I applied and was hired.” “Working closely with the signal group in District 6, I focus on updating and modernizing most signals in the area. I take pride in keeping equipment running smoothly at the shop.” “It's all about taking risks and finding your passion. For me, that passion lies in traffic signals. With a strong support system both above and below me, I can confidently say that I have found my niche in this field.” #Electrician #Highvoltage #MassDOT #Transportation #Trafficsignals #Safety

Last weekend the MassDOT #SRTS team proudly participated in another Ciclovia in Lawrence. Ciclovia is an annual community event that promotes health, wellness, and active transportation by temporarily closing streets to motor vehicles. We hosted a table where we handed out reflective gear and promoted safe walking, biking, and rolling while also running a #bikerodeo course with the help of MassBike! CITY OF LAWRENCE MA

Spotlight on Amber Vaillancourt, Transportation Program Planner III at MassDOT. I began my journey as an intern in the Secretary's Office, focusing on sustainable mobility and the 2019 Massachusetts Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation Plans. After a year, I joined the Highway Administrator's Office as a co-op with the Community Grants Program team. Since 2022, I've been a full-time Community Grants Coordinator. I manage the Shared Streets and Spaces Grant Program and the Local Bottleneck Reduction program. I also support four Community Grant Programs in the Highway Division, including the Chapter 90 Program and Complete Streets Funding Program. My work involves outreach to municipalities and processing contracts for various transportation earmarks, including those from the State Fiscal Year Budget and the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). I've been inspired by many individuals in my journey toward a career in urban planning with a focus on transportation. During my time at the University of Vermont and the University of Massachusetts Boston, I learned from professors and researchers deeply involved in community initiatives that tackled issues like climate justice and affordable housing. These experiences fueled my passion for urban planning, aiming to positively influence the development of our local communities. Currently, my greatest motivation comes from my family and friends, particularly my four-month-old niece, Reya. The drive to create a safe, dependable, and resilient transportation system for her and future generations inspires me daily, especially in terms of enhancing road safety and improving bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. I am most proud of being a part of MassDOT’s Shared Streets and Spaces Grant Program since its inception. The program launched in the summer of 2020 out of the need for communities to redesign public spaces and transportation infrastructure. The program has funded projects, including new sidewalks, bus/bike only lanes, bus stop improvements, and outdoor seating and event spaces. It’s been rewarding to watch the program’s impact throughout the state over the last four years as early pilots have turned into permanent infrastructure changes. I enjoy being a part of MassDOT/MBTA's LGBTQ+ PRIDE resource group and to represent our organization through Pride events such as the Boston Pride Parade. As someone early in my career, it means a lot to connect with folks and learn about the contributions staff have made to transportation in the region. #EmployeeAppreciation #SafeStreets #Transportation #MassDOT
