#FundingFriday Massachusetts-based companies reported raising more than $1 billion dollars over just the last two weeks. Among the top rounds was Seaport Therapeutics, founded and led by serial entrepreneur Daphne Zohar, which recently closed on a $225M Series B after launching in April with a $100M Series A. MassBioDrive harnesses the power of MassBio’s global life sciences network to help new founders launch their biotech startups. We announced our #MassBioDrive Fall 2024 Cohort last month, and are highlighting our five emerging biotech companies chosen to participate. Today, please meet Modulate Bio! Q: Tell us about your company and what you’re developing. What are you most excited about? A: At Modulate Bio we are developing new therapies to treat tremors, epilepsy, anxiety and other neurological disorders. There are millions of patients around the world suffering from debilitating brain diseases, and many current treatments are burdened with severe safety issues. Our platform allows us to create small molecule drugs that provide efficacy, without side-effects. We’ve shown we can do this in animal models of epilepsy and tremors, and are close to selecting compounds for human trials. We are incredibly excited to work with a stellar team of drug developers with the sole mission of bringing life-changing medicines to millions of patients. Q: What advice do you have for other biotech companies just getting started? A: Stay focused. There is lots of hype, advice and dead-ends out there, and in the complex world of healthcare it can be easy to stray off course. Getting the right advisors around your table and listening to people who have successfully developed new treatments and truly impacted patients is the most straightforward way to stay on track. Mentors who have been successful in a similar area have the most helpful guidance, and won’t send you down rabbit holes. It takes time and effort to find these people, but it’s worth it - for your company, and at the end of the day, patients. Q: What has been most impactful or surprising to you since joining the MassBioDrive program? A: The quality of the advisors. We are lucky to have fantastic advisors helping Modulate Bio in the MassBioDrive program, all who have successfully built biotech companies before and understand how to get drugs from lab to patients. This makes it easy to follow their advice. Policy impacts on #biomedical innovation cannot be overstated, either in the positive or the negative. Enjoyed sharing the Longwood Healthcare Leaders stage with Priya Singhal (Biogen), Skip Virgin, and Louis Fogel for a wide-ranging discussion on Bayh-Dole, the Inflation Reduction Act, and other policies that continue to shape the United States' role in drug development and healthcare.
