It’s that time of year…Back to school season also means another flu season is upon us. Flu has a massive health and economic burden that could be lowered with improved vaccines. In recognition of National Immunization Awareness month, the MLSC is proud to recognize Boston University’s cross-sector collaboration with Waters Corporation focused on developing new glycosylation analysis techniques and software to enable generation of more effective vaccines against the influenza A virus, one of the most common types of flu. Glycosylation is a process by which the flu virus alters the glycoproteins on its surface to evade the human immune system. This evolutionary tactic makes it difficult for current vaccines to provide lasting protection, as existing technology struggles to accurately measure these changes. By advancing mass spectrometry techniques, Dr. Joseph Zaia of Boston University is pioneering new methods to better understand and measure glycosylation, which can lead to the development of more effective flu vaccines. Open-source, high-quality, AI-driven data is a public health asset in developing vaccines to fight flu season and one of the reasons why Massachusetts is a leading life sciences ecosystem. This project is an awardee of the MLSC’s Novel Therapeutics Delivery program, which fosters the development of cutting-edge technologies and techniques for the delivery of existing or innovative therapies by bridging the fields of engineering, biology, chemistry, and medicine.
