We are grateful for team Gibson, and the many people involved including Chief Curator Denise Markonish, Spencer Byrne-Seres, Director of Exhibitions, exhibition graphic design and communications, art fabrication, carpenters and contractors from buildings and grounds, and custodial who have made this possible. About us
In May 2024, MASS MoCA will celebrate its 25th anniversary under its new Director, Kristy Edmunds, not only as a contemporary art museum and performing arts venue, but also as a creative campus with a regional, national and global impact. MASS MoCA is one of the world’s liveliest centers for making and enjoying today’s most evocative art. With vast galleries and a stunning collection of indoor and outdoor performing arts venues, MASS MoCA is able to embrace all forms of art: music, sculpture, dance, film, painting, photography, theater, and new, boundary-crossing works of art that defy easy classification. From its beginnings as the major textile mill Arnold Print Works in the mid-19th century, to its days as the Sprague Electric Company in the mid-20th century, to its current iteration as a globally renowned contemporary art museum and fabrication center, the 16-acre MASS MoCA campus has a rich history of serving as the economic engine of the city of North Adams and the surrounding region. Chief Curator Jenny Jaskey brings a fresh perspective to the hollowed walls of The American Academy of Arts and Letters including “Aviary,” an exhibition by Raven Chacon. Versions of Chacon's musical scores which 'resist the notation of Western notation' also appear at MASS MoCA in Like Magic, curated by Alexandra Foradas, a group exhibition representing tools (devices, talismans, rituals, incantations) created to help humanity survive and thrive in a chaotic world. ----- "The American Academy of Arts and Letters, a century-old honor society, sits like a fortress in Upper Manhattan. Housed in a neo-Italian Renaissance complex, it rarely opened its sculpted bronze doors to the general public. Over the years, honorees as varied as Mark Twain, Frank Lloyd Wright, Georgia O’Keeffe, Joan Didion, Robert Caro, Duke Ellington and Stephen Sondheim passed through them. But everyone else? Not so much. That is about to change. The doors are being flung open to the general public and the magnificent Beaux-Arts interior — the buildings were designed by McKim, Mead & White and Cass Gilbert, architects of some of New York City’s most famous landmarks — is being earmarked as a venue for visual and performing artists, and events that combine the two. It’s as if Manhattan’s downtown contemporary art scene is being lured uptown to Washington Heights and to a setting from the Gilded Age." https://lnkd.in/gnnaFy79

How would you spend 36 hours in the Berkshires? Thank you Lauren Matison for the feature in The New York Times as 1 of the top 3 key spots to visit in the Berkshires including a shout out to our on campus restaurant Casita (one of several)! The Berkshires sure is a "slice of rural paradise" - and we love calling it home along with our incredible community of makers of art, theater, music, history, nature and food! #MM25 #LeafPeeping #RoadTrip https://lnkd.in/eS4RcHmc

We are thrilled to collaborate with the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway Conservancy in support of world-renowned, multidisciplinary artist Jeffrey Gibson through the Dewey Square installation making its #Boston debut Sept 19. We look forward to seeing you there, and in the #Berkshires in early November for opening weekend of Gibson's newly commissioned, immersive installation POWER FULL BECAUSE WE’RE DIFFERENT, filling our signature Building 5 gallery. Paying homage to the past, while signaling hope for the future, through the lens of queer and Indigenous creatives whose cultural narratives have been historically marginalized is central to Gibson’s work and now the public has two opportunities in Massachusetts to experience it first hand. 🙏 Commonwealth of Massachusetts #VisitMA #JeffreyGibson #artsmatter https://lnkd.in/g7nq9ZV3

Congratulations to our very own Board of Trustees Chair, Mariko Silver, on her new position leading the transformative next chapter of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts! ——— She will take the reins of Lincoln Center as it works to broaden its audience, navigate an uncertain economy and push through an ambitious plan to tear down the barriers between the center and the surrounding neighborhood. She will also help shape its programming. The appointment is a milestone for Lincoln Center: Silver, 46, whose father is Jewish and mother is Japanese American, will be the first woman of color to serve as president and chief executive. It is also a homecoming of sorts: Silver grew up a few blocks from the center and studied dance and theater as a child. https://lnkd.in/gX7hR_5B

"Priorities have shifted for today’s cultural institutions," says Director Kristy Edmunds. "It’s about helping the community, and helping artists." People have relied on outsized numbers to describe MASS MoCA ever since it first opened in 1999 in the old Sprague Electric Co. factory complex with a two-fold promise: It would bring world-class contemporary art to the Berkshires while also leading an economic revival in this faded factory town... ...After 25 years of odds-defying expansion, MASS MoCA is at a crossroads. The campus still has numerous buildings that could be developed. But instead of expanding the museum’s footprint, director Kristy Edmunds is seeking to usher in a new era of sustainability, stabilizing MASS MoCA’s finances, making its campus more environmentally friendly, and delivering more fully on its economic promise to the city — all while maintaining the museum’s freewheeling spirit. https://lnkd.in/gqY8YV_p
