Thunderstorms and possible tornadoes are once again in the forecast Monday for the south-central U.S., including Oklahoma, where, over the weekend, a breakout of twisters injured at least 11 people, damaged homes and left thousands without power, officials said. Flood and tornado warnings continue throughout central and eastern Oklahoma as forecasters anticipate additional rain to inundate the already storm-battered state. The 9th annual U.S. Home Trends Report from LexisNexis found that all-perils lost costs and all-perils frequency increased by 4.1% and 11%, respectively, from 2022 to 2023. New numbers from the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation are shedding light on the number of #insuranceclaims filed due to damage from #hurricanemilton. As of Wednesday, over $2 billion in insured losses have been reported to the Office of Insurance Regulation from Hurricane Milton. That’s about $1 billion more than the total amount of insured losses reported so far from #HurricaneHelene. The U.S. #propertycasualty home #insurance industry has experienced an upward trend in loss cost across all perils combined over the past seven years. These figures include: hail; wind, water, fire and lightning; and non-weather related claims such as water leaks, thefts or liability. Although tornadoes are common when hurricanes make landfall, most are on the weaker end of the spectrum. In fact, less than 1% of tornadoes associated with landfalling tropical systems have been rated EF-3 or stronger. This year, however, four out of five hurricanes that made landfall in the U.S. have produced EF-3-intensity tornadoes, including #HurricaneMilton in South Florida. Recent research has suggested that tropical cyclones could produce more tornadoes in a warmer world. In a study published in June, researchers modeled hurricanes Ivan, Katrina, Rita and Harvey in a warmer, future climate.
