On Tuesday, Governor Wes Moore signed an executive order to establish Reinvest Baltimore, a coordinated effort between the State of Maryland, Baltimore City, and nonprofit and for-profit partners to eliminate concentrations of vacant properties, revitalize neighborhoods and maximize the economic potential and quality of life for residents in Baltimore City. The governor’s order calls for the establishment of the Baltimore Vacants Reinvestment Council which will tap key community, corporate, philanthropic and government leaders to leverage targeted investments to move at least 5,000 vacant properties into homeownership or other positive outcomes over the next five years. Secretary Jake Day will serve as council chair and Baltimore City Department of Housing and Community Development Commissioner Alice Kennedy will serve as vice chair. Gov. Moore appointed additional council members, including Rev. George Hopkins, co-chair of Baltimoreans United in Leadership Development, and Mark Anthony Thomas, president and chief executive officer of the Greater Baltimore Committee. It was a busy week as DHCD was on hand to celebrate the completion of projects we’ve supported in Baltimore City, Glenarden and Essex. On Wednesday, Assistant Secretary Gregory Hare spoke at the ribbon cutting of the third phase of Glenarden Hills Redevelopment Project, which will provide more than 150 housing units to Prince George’s County. On Thursday, Assistant Secretary Hare helped cut the ribbon on Woodland Gardens I, a development project in the Park Heights neighborhood of Baltimore City that adds 63-unit of affordable family housing. That same morning, Assistant Secretary Carol Gilbert served as a speaker at the official opening of the Essex Community Development Corporation’s new office. Essex EDC is working to revitalize that area of Baltimore County. Congratulations to all our partners! Photos credits: Photo: J.J.
