Many leaders seem to forget that leading others, more than anything else, should be held in reverence. Being a leader means that you have been placed in a position to serve others. Too often, I have seen leaders duck and cover, throw their people under the bus, throw their positional weight around, and instead of leading from a place of service, lead from a place of ego when things get rough. You are privileged to be in a position where you can direct, shape, and focus people’s potential on a specific result. When you are given the responsibility to lead, you are given a tremendous opportunity to influence many people's lives positively; a responsibility you should never take for granted. It's counterproductive to recruit great people with the expertise to help your organization go to the next level and then micromanage them. It's highly illogical and makes absolutely no sense because it will eventually lead to a stifling of their creativity, an erosion of trust, and the creation of a highly toxic work environment. If you have any aspirations of becoming a successful leader, it's important to provide your team with the freedom and autonomy to carry out their work. Create an environment that is free from any forms of toxicity, where individuals feel empowered and valued. By doing so, you will not only witness substantial growth within your company, but more importantly, you will see the growth and development of your team as well. New research shows that low trust is a higher driver of turnover than pay. Trust is a critical element of workplace culture. Trust makes people more resilient and adaptable. The presence of trust also replenishes those we lead. When times are tough and we go through periods of crisis and disruption, employees who trust us will stick with us. They know we’ll make decisions in the organization’s and their own best interests. Three key learnings on trust from The Human Margin: 1. Trust really, really matters for recruitment and retention. 2. Trust building isn’t something that can be delegated completely to the front line or the direct supervisor. 3. Midlevel leaders have a role in shaping their teams’ trust of senior leaders.
