We are changing the way the world treats women.

About us

WE ARE CHANGING THE WAY THE WORLD TREATS WOMEN. Women are different, right from the beginning. But until 1992, when we were founded, there wasn’t even a research institute dedicated to women’s issues. Today, Magee-Womens Research Institute is solving real world problems and impacting lives—in the fields of cancer, heart disease, fertility, HIV, Alzheimer’s and more. But the potential is boundless. Anything is possible when the country’s largest women’s research institute partners with a world-class women’s hospital.

  • 🦠 What is our microbiome, how does it impact human health, and how might we modify it and use it to inform the future of disease prevention and health care? During the Magee-Womens Summit, we will provide a roadmap on the potential promises of microbiome research and women’s health. We will discuss how incorporating the microbiome into current concepts of human health and disease offers the potential to revolutionize the future of how we predict, prevent, diagnose, and treat illnesses in women and their progeny. Be part of a riveting conversation about The World Within Us: The Microbiome, featuring: • Eran Elinav, MD, PhD: Professor, Systems Immunology – Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel • Eldin Jašarević, PhD: Assistant Professor, OB/GYN-Reproductive Sciences and Computational and Systems Biology – University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine • Barbara Methé, PhD: Professor and Co-Director – University of Pittsburgh Center for Medicine and the Microbiome • Jennifer Wargo, MD, MMSc: Professor, Surgical Oncology – MD Anderson Cancer Center Register today at MageeSummit.org.

  • Within any passion or spark of creativity lies the ability to make a difference. Dominique Murray Photography knows this fact firsthand. Through her artistic event series, Splatter Me Crazy, she has helped raise support for Magee-Womens in honor of her lost loved one. Having witnessed her grandmother’s battle with breast cancer, Dominique is an advocate for finding a cure for the disease, which is how she came to give to Magee-Womens through one of her passions: art. “As a female business owner, it is empowering to donate to an organization dedicated to advancing women’s health,” Dominique says. • Gestational diabetes is the most common medical disorder in pregnancy, impacting both mothers and their children. A new paper co-authored by Magee-Womens investigator Dr. Maisa Feghali advocates for a personalized, integrated life course approach to treatment — from preconception to postpartum. Early pregnancy lifestyle interventions — especially those before 14 weeks of gestation –– could prevent late gestational diabetes. At all stages in this life course approach, across both high-resource and low-resource settings, a more systematic process for identifying and overcoming barriers to preventative care and treatment is needed to reduce the current global burden of gestational diabetes. 🔗 Read the full paper here: https://bit.ly/3YZ6PqQ

  • Did you know that women at all academic levels (graduate students to faculty) are less likely to be credited with authorship than men? 📉 This editorial piece co-authored by Magee-Womens investigator Dr. Mellissa Mann shines a light on this gender disparity. This #WomensEqualityDay read about the groundbreaking work of women in developmental epigenetics, such as: ·Mary Lyon: Her discovery of X-chromosome inactivation provided fundamental insights into dosage compensation mechanisms in mammals. ·Barbara McClintock: Nobel laureate whose work on transposons ("jumping genes") and epigenetic silencing challenged traditional genetic paradigms and emphasized dynamic gene regulation. ·Susan Clark: Developed bisulfite mutagenesis techniques – the bedrock for precision mapping global DNA methylation. 🔗 Read the full text here: https://bit.ly/3YcqV0k
