“The new Democracy Fund will support the realization of aspirations of West Africans for ‘democracy dividends’ and a more just, verdant, and peaceful world.” - Dr. Kole Shettima, Director of our Nigeria office Learn more about the collaborative fund we recently launched with Ford Foundation, Open Society Foundations, and Luminate to reimagine, renew, and strengthen democracy across West African states currently facing various democratic challenges ⬇️
As an organization focused on the advancement of social justice, the Ford Foundation is matching our commitment with action with the launch of the West Africa Democracy Fund, which, in partnership with Open Society Foundations, MacArthur Foundation, and Luminate, will direct $20M over three years into the region in support of efforts that reimagine, renew, and strengthen democracy in West Africa. Following the lead of our civil society partners across the region, this fund will propel our collective efforts in expanding democratic and civic spaces for citizens’ voices to be included in defining the norms for the governance of their countries. Research has shown the inextricable link between the rising decline of democracy across West Africa and rising inequality, therefore these issues must be addressed simultaneously. Learn more.
