    Mental Health Therapist x Educator

I wish clients in therapy knew... It's perfectly okay if it's been a while since we last saw each other. No need to apologize or explain your absence unless you really want to. I'm happy you've returned so we can pick up where we left off. Life happens. There's nothing you can say that will shock or surprise me. Seriously. You can never talk "too much" about yourself. I understand why you automatically apologize when you're vulnerable or while you cry. It's not only unnecessary, but it's also something we'll work on together. You're not paying for me to care; you're paying for my expertise. The care is free and genuine. Therapists, what would you like your clients to understand about your role or the therapy process? #mentalhealth #mentalhealtheducation #clinicalsupervision #clientcare #therapist

Instead of turning around completely and focusing on what's behind you, checking the rearview mirror from time to time can help us learn from, rather than dwell/focus on the past. This analogy is useful and has been used to reflect on our relationships to the past and how it connects to the direction we are driving in ✍️🏼 #psychology #mentalhealth #therapy #trauma

I appreciate this post. Toxic masculinity and the patriarchal standards that have been set harm everyone, not just woman-identifying individuals. Admittedly, it would always trigger me to hear things like "Women are so emotional!" This was often said in a derogatory manner implying that men are "logical" and "rational" as opposed to women. In reality, HUMAN BEINGS are emotional. Human beings can be both logical and have emotions. These are not mutually exclusive rather, this is the human experience. However, society has ingrained beliefs that having emotions is a weakness and that, specifically for men, they should be repressed. Redirected. Hense, higher rates of violence, suicide, substance abuse, and physical ailments (which we know from thorough research are often directly tied to underlying psychological conditions- "psychosomatic"). The more we can move away from what it "does" and "does not" mean to be a real "man", the more support we can provide for those who need it. Your gender identity should not dictate your ability to express yourself healthily and seek treatment when necessary. We're all in this together.

November is MOVEMBER: Men's Mental Health Awareness Month. If focusing on men's mental health is not an urgency, then we don't know what is. The data and research is extremely painful and we hope it moves us to action to focus on mental health in the workplace, and particularly men's mental health. - Prevalence of Mental Health Issues: Studies show that men are less likely than women to report mental health problems and seek help. Despite this, mental health issues are common among men, with depression, anxiety, and substance abuse being particularly prevalent. - Suicide Rates: Men are at a higher risk for suicide. According to the World Health Organization, nearly 800,000 people die due to suicide every year, and it is the second leading cause of death in 15-29-year-olds. The suicide rate among men is significantly higher than that of women in most parts of the world. Men are up to four times more likely than women to die by suicide. - Substance Abuse: Men are more likely than women to use almost all types of illicit drugs, which are linked to a higher risk of developing a mental illness. Substance abuse is often used as a coping mechanism for undiagnosed or untreated mental health issues. - Stigma and Seeking Help: There is a significant stigma associated with men seeking help for mental health issues. Cultural norms often portray the expression of emotional pain or distress as a sign of weakness, leading to underreporting and under-treatment of mental health - Barriers to Mental Health Treatment: A study in the journal "Psychological Medicine" revealed that men often cite barriers such as social stigma, downplaying symptoms, and a preference for self-reliance as reasons for not seeking mental health treatment. - Impact of Unemployment on Men's Mental Health: Research has shown that unemployment can take a heavier mental toll on men than on women, partly due to societal expectations and self-perception related to work and providing for a family. - Men's Response to Stress: The American Psychological Association has found that men are more likely than women to report physical symptoms associated with stress, such as headache, increased heart rate, or muscle tension. - Life Expectancy and Mental Health: According to the World Health Organization, the global average life expectancy is higher for women than men. This disparity is partly attributed to higher rates of suicide, substance abuse, and untreated mental health conditions in men.

“The word “triggered” is used more casually nowadays, which has likely caused some confusion. But it’s important to note that there’s a difference between being uncomfortable or offended and having a true mental health symptom. In general, when a person is “triggered,” they’re being provoked by a stimulus that awakens or worsens the symptoms of a traumatic event or mental health condition.” Read more at Psych Central: https://lnkd.in/dPQDfUqE #triggers #mentalhealthawareness
