With available financial incentives and updates to green building certification programs imminent, the focus on reducing a building's embodied carbon is more important than ever. Join us for a discussion on the process of using a whole building life cycle assessment (LCA) as an iterative tool for understanding and ultimately reducing a building's embodied carbon. We will also dive into practical measures and material selections design teams can make to reduce a development's embodied carbon. This past Tuesday we opened our doors for our September 'Learning Before Libations,' a budding after-work gathering among our ever-growing network. Thank you to all who attended, and please join us next time if you haven't yet! Casey Steven Ross, P.E., Director of Energy Services at Lorax, got us started with an overview of the Maryland Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS) program, which will begin requiring owners to report benchmarking data in 2025. Michael Feldman-Wiencek of the D.C. Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE) regaled us with a deep-dive on the District of Columbia's nation-leading BEPS program. His presentation revealed a program that is aspirational and highly ambitious, yet also flexible to support building owners make necessary upgrades. Afterwards, the audience peppered Michael with questions during a lively Q&A session. We hope to see you at our next session on Embodied Carbon for drinks, hors d'oeuvres, and more valuable presentations & discussion.

Please join Julian Frost and the The Congress for the New Urbanism on Saturday, July 27th for a walking tour of Baltimore City's HOPE VI Housing Projects. The tour will focus on the human-scaled and mixed-income neighborhoods of central Baltimore and how the New Urbanist movement exerted influence on the HOPE VI program, introduced by HUD in 1992.
I've been working with the CNU-DC board to organize a bus/walking tour of Baltimore's HOPE VI projects on Saturday, July 27th. This is an exciting opportunity to see how New Urbanist design has impacted Baltimore's built environment. Architects from Torti Gallas + Partners (the DC firm that designed three of the four HOPE VI projects we'll be touring) will be on hand to share their experiences in designing mixed-income, human-scaled neighborhoods. #newurbanism #hopevi #baltimore #housing See ticket prices and secure your spot here: https://lnkd.in/eMypP_wz

Lorax hosted guest speaker Preston Thomas, Energy Program Manager at Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) for our June Learning Before Libations series. Preston spoke on the latest updates to the Multifamily Energy Efficiency and Housing Affordability (MEEHA)-EmPower Program. We learned that the MEEHA Program funds energy efficiency and electrifications measures for affordable housing developments through EmPower (almost $135M in available funding) and the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Program ($5M in available funding). To support these programs and align financial incentives, Lorax is available for energy efficiency, electrification, auditing, and green building certification services. #LearningBeforeLibations #MEEHA #AffordableHousing

Just last week, our very own Darrell (Brandon) Nott earned his BECxP + CXA+BE credentials, verifying his expert knowledge of design, construction, commissioning and maintenance of building enclosures. As decarbonization becomes more and more of a priority around the country, the focus on building enclosure quality is even more critical. Here's to better supporting our clients in their sustainability and energy efficiency goals through deep knowledge and technical skills in building enclosure science! #EnergyEfficiency #BuildingEnclosures #BECxP #Decarbonization
