About us

We are The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the largest nonprofit dedicated to creating a world without blood cancers. Since 1949, we’ve invested more than $1.3 billion in groundbreaking research, pioneering many of today’s most innovative approaches. We work tirelessly to find cures and ensure patients can access the lifesaving treatments they need. When someone experiences the fear and uncertainty of a cancer diagnosis, we provide hope, compassion, education and support. And we are making an impact in the cancer community. More than 70 years of fighting blood cancers has led us to a game changing belief. The cures for cancer are in our blood. We focus on three key areas: Research We are the largest nonprofit funder of blood cancer research. • “Chronic illness just goes on and on and on and on and on. And the cost of chronic illness goes on and on and on. How do I maintain a quality of life with a chronic illness? I realize that I can't do some things that others can, and I make lifestyle changes to accommodate for an illness that is never going away. There is no cure that I'm aware of for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) today.” On September 1st, the global CLL community comes together to raise awareness about this disease. For most people, CLL is diagnosed before symptoms occur and is usually found in routine blood work, tests, or physical exams for another health issue. We strive for individuals like George, affected by CLL, to have more time with his family, on the golf course, and living with chronic #BloodCancer. September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is dedicated to sharing experiences and giving patients, volunteers, and healthcare professionals a platform. Thanks to a matching gift from the Big Nova Foundation and The Moore Family, your donation to LLS through 9/30/24 will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $250,000. • "Every step along the way, my mom's care team kept mentioning how the outlook for patients like my mom was so much better now than it had been even 10 years ago, thanks to advances in medicine. My mom participated in a research study during her first round of chemotherapy. She was constantly discussing the variety of treatment options available to her, thanks to new trials and approved medications. My family later found out that an overwhelming majority of these treatments and medications were available to my mom thanks to funding and support from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). I was so thankful to LLS for giving my mom the best odds possible with her leukemia (a blood cancer). My mom was my biggest supporter during my marathon training, just like she had been throughout my life. Whenever training got tough and I didn't think I could run another mile, I drew inspiration from my mom's determination with her leukemia and from the idea that I could be making life just a little bit easier for someone else diagnosed with blood cancer in the future. We had hope and time with my mom after her diagnosis because of treatments and medical advancements funded by LLS. I found purpose and a way to feel my mom through Team In Training. Eventually, we will find a cure for #BloodCancer because of support for LLS inspired by people like my mom." - Katharine, daughter, marathoner, and teammate. During #NationalGriefAwarenessDay, we remember those who help improve the outlooks for future treatments for blood cancer patients, like Katharine's mom and so many others. Curing blood cancer and improving lives are a team effort. Find your event today 👉 https://bit.ly/470DRJb

  • “At 21, my life took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with stage 3B Hodgkin lymphoma. Earlier that year, I moved 2,500 miles away from my family in Florida to Los Angeles, which was meant to mark the start of a new chapter. But instead, I found myself facing a 3-month ‘cold’ that was actually blood cancer. Despite the initial shock, I made a conscious decision to view this day with optimism. It signified the start of my healing process, after not knowing what was wrong for so long.” – Racheli Peltier, lymphoma survivor, and Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at LLS Read more about how Racheli celebrates her healing here 👉 https://bit.ly/4dEP6te

  • "We were first sent to hospital because of an abscess in her neck. After multiple tests, referrals to various specialists, and labs, they came to a rheumatologic diagnosis of systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (systemic JIA). After 3 treatments, her symptoms and blood work were not improving. Following a bone marrow biopsy, we learned she had acute myeloid leukemia (AML). She immediately began chemotherapy which was followed by a bone marrow transplant. Day +78, we are blessed to be busy at home. As much as being home has helped heal our souls, it has brought on more feelings of wanting to do the ‘normal’ things we expected to be able to do once we started our family - going to the grocery store, family vacations, hanging out in large groups of friends, taking Raeleigh to water parks, state fairs, and amusement parks. It’s a hard balance and I fail every day. I feel frustrated being an ‘oncology parent’ and then I feel guilty for ever feeling that way because Raeleigh is the one who has been through the worst of it all. Watching life continue around us has been hard. We wish we could say it’s easier to parent now more than ever since we’re home, but the daily struggles are still very real. When will it ever go away? Probably never, but we will continue to try our very best. Raeleigh will continue to have weekly appointments, and she will have a bone marrow biopsy, with her Hickman (external central line) removed. We pray that August continues to bring Raeleigh and our family physical and spiritual healing.” Through the Dare to Dream Project, our dedication to supporting those impacted by pediatric #BloodCancer deepens each day. We are revolutionizing pediatric treatment by funding a global search for target therapies and innovating care for the littlest patients like Raleigh. • Promising news for blood cancer patients! ❤️ The U.S. FDA recently approved a new treatment for chronic graft-versus host disease (cGvHD) in children and adults. GvHD is a common complication of stem cell transplants and happens when the donor’s cells (the graft) see the patient’s healthy cells (the host) as foreign and attack them. “This new treatment will help more blood cancer patients successfully navigate the challenge of GvHD after stem cell transplant,” says Dr. Gwen Nichols, LLS Chief Medical Officer. “While doctors have learned a lot about how to prevent this serious complication, it still impacts many people.” Get all the details 👉 https://bit.ly/4fNY5K7
