Lighthouse is proud to operate a family emergency shelter with 18 private units and 61 total beds. Last year, Lighthouse served 339 individuals (including 226 children) with 21,626 nights of emergency shelter, daily meals, and essential services to connect them to housing. Thank you Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan for investing in and highlighting our work at Lighthouse to provide safety, stability, and healing for young people experiencing homelessness. “Youth experiencing homelessness are often kind of a hidden population,” said Lighthouse Director of Youth Programs Michael Centi. “When someone says ‘homeless,’ you don’t picture that 16-year-old who ran away from home or the 22-year-old who is kind of bouncing around place to place. Youth often are very resistant for services, so we need to make sure we are providing very safe and secure and inviting environments for youth to access.”
“Youth experiencing homelessness are often kind of a hidden population of people.” This population is seen daily at Lighthouse, an Oakland County nonprofit providing support for Michigan's homeless youth. With help from a BCBSM Foundation grant, the organization is adding full time counseling staff to help them service the roughly 150 youth that walk through their doors each year. The work we do is more critical now than ever before. The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled that cities can ban people from sleeping and camping in public places, meaning those experiencing #homelessness can be ticketed, fined, or even jailed for simply having no place else to go. Statewide, Michigan had an estimated 32,589 homeless individuals as of 2022, up from 30,113 the year before. At Lighthouse, we provide emergency shelter, food and support services every day to help people get back on their feet. It's part of our larger effort to build equitable communities that alleviate poverty. Our CEO Ryan Hertz shares his thoughts on the ruling below in this report from Crain's Detroit Business.
Food insecurity impacts 12% of Oakland County residents, including more than 29,000 children. Partners like Bank of America enable Lighthouse to address this need through volunteer and financial support.
