Connecting women & non-binary engineers to companies with vetted work environments.

About us

Leopard works with women & non-binary software engineers to help them assess & connect with tech companies that are offering *legitimately* better opportunities. We gather transparent data about the things women & non-binary folks care about but are hard to figure out; things like gender balance in engineering and in leadership, commitment to DE&I, benefits, work flexibility, quality of people managers, etc.

Trying to figure out a company *actually* cares about Diversity & Inclusion 🏳️🌈? Ask one of these 20 questions during the interview process: 1. How does the company define diversity and inclusion, and what steps do you take to foster a diverse and inclusive environment? 2. What percentage of women are currently employed at the company, and how does this compare to industry standards? 3. Can you provide specific examples of initiatives or programs the company has implemented to promote diversity and inclusion? 4. How does your team address unconscious bias during the hiring and promotion processes? Are there bands, rubrics, etc? 5. Are there any employee resource groups or affinity networks focused on supporting underrepresented groups, including women in tech? 6. How do you ensure that women are given equal opportunities for career growth and advancement within the organization? 7. What kind of mentorship or sponsorship programs are available for women in the company? 8. Has the company conducted any diversity and inclusion training or workshops for employees? If so, what were the outcomes? 9. How do you handle incidents of discrimination or harassment? Can you share any specific examples and how they were addressed? 10. What measures are in place to ensure equal pay and benefits for men and women in similar roles? 11. How does the company support work-life balance for women, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities? 12. Are there flexible work arrangements or remote work options available to accommodate the needs of women? 13. What steps does the company take to ensure that women's voices are heard and valued in decision-making processes? 14. How does the company promote a culture of respect and inclusivity among employees? 15. What efforts are made to attract and retain diverse talent in the tech industry? 16. Does the company have any partnerships or collaborations with organizations focused on diversity and inclusion in tech? 17. How do you measure progress and success in creating a diverse and inclusive work environment? 18. How does the company address intersectionality and the unique challenges faced by women from different backgrounds? 19. Can you provide examples of women who have had successful careers and growth within the company? 20. What ongoing efforts are being made to improve diversity and inclusion within the company, and what are the long-term goals?

One limitation of the technical interview is that it requires candidates not only to solve problems, but to solve them under pressure. Many companies try to make the experience as comfortable as possible (I've been on the hiring side of this, too), but the reality is that you probably have a limited amount of time, maybe someone watching you, and you have one shot to prove yourself. That produces anxiety and pressure. For some people I know, it vastly affects their performance. There are better and worse ways to conduct interviews to ease the pressure put on candidates. And this should be top of mind for companies. But I think there will always be some extra pressure to prove yourself in a limited amount of time. I have definitely suffered from this and wrote about my strategy (https://lnkd.in/gse-JiJH). But in general, I have found practicing live interviews helpful and also advocate finding a strategy that works for you -- that kicks your brain into action when it goes blank, that lets you work through the problem under your own control.

Fast Company talked with talent leaders (including me!) about why the #septembersurge this year was more of a blip, and what YOU can do about it as a job seeker (especially new grads 👩🎓). CTO at mRelief

✨ Being the CTO of a tech nonprofit for ~4 years has been one of the most remarkable experiences of my life. Now it’s time for me to go back to doing what I love most: wreaking havoc in the command line. I’m so lucky that I get to stay at mRelief (loml) and am excited to search for a new visionary CTO who is as passionate about making social services accessible as the team has been for the past 10 years. If you know someone who might be a good fit, send them our way! 💙

💜 LEOPARD COMMUNITY QUESTION 💜: How should I handle interview questions about interpersonal dynamics? Ex: "What was your relationship with your manager like?" or "How would your last manager rank your performance on a scale of 1-10?" We workshopped it live during Lexi Lewtan's Office Hours and decided that the best answer had a mix of these: 🙅♀️ AVOID PEOPLE-BLAMING:  No surprises but we tried to avoid negative or defensive language. Instead we brain-dumped the "unfiltered story", then shortened it and "toned" it to be candid + professional + positive. 🌎 BUSINESS CONTEXT > PEOPLE PROBLEMS: We tried to angle the response to be about business needs & challenges, ie not purely interpersonal team dynamics. Fine line between "avoiding the question" and "providing important context" so personal interview cheat sheet felt helpful for this type of question. 💡 HIGHLIGHTED LEARNINGS: We focused on constructive actions, ie "I learned that I am really passionate about interacting with internal stakeholders" or "I learned that I really enjoy and thrive in a more collaborative environment versus a highly asynchronous one"
