In this segment of our 30 Years, 30 Stories series, we’d like to share more about our firm’s Summer Associate program. Each summer, we invite a group of Summer Associates to join our firm, where they are given an opportunity to develop hands-on experience within one of our practice groups. They learn from senior attorneys who will include them in client meetings, task them with legal research, allow them to attend depositions and hearings, and engage with them in a series of networking events. The program also includes bi-weekly “lunch and learns,” where the Summer Associates learn about business development, marketing, and client relationships, as well as gain insight into attorneys’ perspective on working in a law firm setting. Summer Associates are also tasked with preparing and conducting a presentation for the firm partnership at the end of the summer. Delighted to have met up with old colleagues and associates and to establish new relationships when the US Shenzhen Federation joined with the Shenzhen General Chamber of Commerce in the Shenzhen-Los Angeles Economic and Trade Exchange Discussion Forum and a dinner afterwards. Having worked over many years with clients’ matters as diverse as energy projects in China, the contractual pairing of US architects and engineers with Chinese design bureaus and of US and Chinese business enterprises for manufacturing and construction through worldwide joint ventures, the development, manufacture and export to the US of Asian culinary sauces, and the transfer of Chinese technology through subsidiaries established in the US and employment of US workers, it was encouraging to participate in discussions of innovation and collegial cooperation among business-minded entrepreneurs from Shenzhen and California. Leech Tishman has a robust China Practice Group as well as a business-oriented practice ranging from corporate, construction, compliance and intellectual property support to (among others) energy, environmental, data privacy, tax, employment and insolvency legal services. The successes in, and hurdles to, US and China business collaboration for economic development and the interplay between economy, politics and culture provide grounds for the services we provide.
