A majority of these responses speak to a lack of leadership development, not character. Most leaders care and are well-intentioned. When they're unable to consistently show up in a way that best supports their team, it hurts the employees, the leader and the company. Equipping leaders to effectively motivate, coach and speak with their team members enhances employee engagement and improves business outcomes.

Responses were mixed when employees who voluntarily left their organization were asked an open-ended question about how their manager treated them during the exit experience. About one in four respondents (24%) reported being treated professionally with respect and understanding. In contrast, another one in four (24%) encountered rudeness, hostility or a generally negative reaction, and 10% were met with indifference or a lack of acknowledgment. Only 7% felt their manager made an effort to retain them despite the high cost of turnover for organizations. Every. Single. Word. That's what I loved about Ashley Goodall's latest brutally honest book, "The Problem with Change." This hard-hitting book tackles what's wrong with how we manage organizational change and what to do about it. Check out the latest edition of Mindful Leader for key insights and share this with every leader you know. This needs to be part of the conversation for your next corporate initiative. #leadership

Empowering leaders to enhance their team's impact and engagement through curiosity.

One challenge we deal with as leaders happens when there's mismatch between strengths and expectations for an individual on our team.   When we come in as a new leader and "adopt" someone on our team or someone is transferred to our team who we realize isn't quite where they need to be to perform the way we'd expect for that role, we dread dealing with it.   We don't want to disappoint them, and we know we need someone who can get the job done.   I call this difco (difficult conversation) territory.   There is a way to handle this without completely demoralizing that individual.   First, be sure you are making an objective assessment of their strengths rather than a decision based on your gut and what you think they're lacking.   Second, be human.   People take on roles with a strong desire to succeed.   If you have objectively assessed that they don't have what it takes to do well in the role yet, don't dance around it.   Share why you're calling the meeting ahead of time (don't blindside them), then have an open, empathetic conversation about what you expect and what competencies they need to develop.   Ask them how they feel about what you shared, give them time to digest it and offer to meet with them again in a few days.   Work with this team member to find a solution. Don't make decisions for them (e.g., they're not ready so I'm going to find someone who can jump in).   It's tempting to go for the easy choice for you, especially if you're feeling overwhelmed yourself.   Don't give in.   What you do in this moment can have far-reaching implications on the morale, confidence and career trajectory of this individual.   If you truly don't feel you have the time it will take to train or coach them, find another way to set them up for success.   Maybe you connect them with a leader from another department.   Maybe you set them up with an external coach or have them sign up for an experiential learning program. Maybe you do all three.   The point is, even if they're not quite there yet, they likely can get there with the right support and resources.   You could be that leader who shows them you believe in their ability to get there.   That individual will be so grateful for your support and feel so engaged that they'll more than likely surpass your expectations.   As a leader, you're not just responsible for the output of your team. You're responsible for them as individuals. #leadership

Empowering leaders to enhance their team's impact and engagement through curiosity.

Do you ever find yourself wondering when to speak up in meetings, especially when there are really strong (or loud) voices in the room?   Maybe you're uncertain because you:   ➡ Don't want to "say something stupid" or be judged ➡ Have had experiences where your opinions were dismissed ➡ Don't feel you have the expertise or enough information ➡ Aren't sure how to word your perspective, especially if it's in conflict with a popular opinion   I've felt that way for all those reasons and more.   What I realized though is that the diversity of perspectives and experiences is what leads to the best outcome.   My ability to "see the forest and the trees" gave me a unique perspective that was valuable to share.   I started to speak up more. I didn't always get it right.   I realized it wasn't about whose perspective wins the day, but how each perspective moves the conversation forward, closer to a solution.   Now, I work with many clients who want to build confidence and speak up to advance in their leadership journeys, but they feel shaky about what to say and when to jump in.   I encourage them to find their moments and contribute in meaningful ways.   Check out these three tips to help you start speaking up with more confidence in meetings. Start with one meeting in which you don't typically speak up.   If you're feeling nervous about it, find champions within the meeting whom you can solicit honest, compassionate feedback from after the meeting to see how your message landed.   Unless you're lead on a project, it's unlikely that people will stop and "pass you the mic" to share your perspective, so don't wait for that to happen.   How you show up in meetings can impact how you're seen as a leader within your company. Don't let self-doubt hold you and your career back.
