About us

Latino Outdoors offers free outdoor activities and supports people who are receiving their introduction to nature, creating a welcoming and family-friendly environment with outings that weave together aspects of culture, community, wellness, and connection. Guided by LO’s theory of change, volunteers craft outdoor experiences that emphasize connections between people, place, process, and policy. The goals are to inspire participants’ conservation ethic, encourage their evolving engagement in outdoor recreation, and perhaps most importantly, recognize and celebrate the different ways in which diverse communities already connect with the outdoors. LO believes these outcomes will arise naturally if individuals and communities have an equitable opportunity to play and recreate outdoors.

El día en el parque was full of smiles, paletas, and familias enjoying nature! LO Austin partnered with Pease Park Conservancy, A Rocha International, American Youthworks, Defenders of Wildlife, and Austin Youth River Watch to celebrate Latino Conservation Week and lead outdoor activities for all ages. The day was filled with a pollinator pinecone building station where kids built their own biodegradable bird feeders, native seed giveaways, a plant swapping station, a bilingual walk through the forest, and a water quality testing station. It was a beautiful way to celebrate conservation, comunidad y cultura! Reposted from Latino Outdoors

#TrailblazerTuesday Today, we're celebrating the extraordinary life of Betty Reid Soskin who turned 103 recently! Born in 1921, Betty's journey has taken her from working as a file clerk during World War II in a segregated unit of the Boilermakers Union to working as a park ranger at the National Park Service in her later life until she retired at the age of 100. During her time as a park ranger, she dedicated herself to educating and inspiring generations of visitors at the Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park and Golden Gate National Recreation Area where she offered reflections on the history of the parks and the experiences of Black communities, service members, and women during WWII. Throughout her career and her life, Betty's passion for her family, for truth, and storytelling has been unwavering. More recently, the documentary "Sign My Name to Freedom" was produced. The film chronicles Betty's remarkable life as a Black Mother, artist, and activist in the East Bay and shines a spotlight on her talents as a singer & songwriter. Join us as we celebrate Betty Reid Soskin and her incredible lifetime of contributions as a musician, an advocate, and a storyteller. Feliz cumpleaños, Betty! 💚 Follow Sign My Name to Freedom - a documentary film in production to learn more about this documentary and about Betty's amazing journey! 📸: Sign My Name to Freedom, Green Girl Leah, Chanell Stone for The New York Times and Justin Sulivan
