📢 LGBTQ+ youth deserve to be supported and affirmed in their homes and communities. Too often, however, transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse (TNGD) youth and their families lack access to support that promotes their healthy identity development, which has led to disproportionate involvement in child welfare, juvenile legal, and homelessness systems. As documented in our Safe Havens II report, there are currently 46 states with no explicit policies that protect youth experiencing homelessness from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. As a nation, we are failing TNGD youth, who call for community services that promote family health, increase acceptance, and keep youth from entering out-of-home systems. Safe Havens II provides a vital roadmap for policymakers and allies to address the gaps in care for this vulnerable community. Along with national data and policy information, Safe Havens II features insights and recommendations from Emilio, Gina, Jaxsyn, Shawn, Kayden, Paris, and Tyler, seven TNGD youth contributors with lived experience in foster care and other out-of-home placements. With 46 states still failing to protect these vulnerable youth, it's time for action. Dive into their stories and understand the urgent need to protect TNGD youth in out-of-home placements with Safe Havens II ➡️ safehavensreport.org #SafeHavens #ProtectTransYouth #SystemAccountability #TransRights #EqualityForAll #LGBTQYouth #YouthAdvocacy #PolicyChange #LGBTQRights #LGBTQ #SocialJustice

Today, LDF alongside co-counsel Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, filed an amicus brief in United States v. Skrmetti – a case challenging a Tennessee law that bans medically necessary gender-affirming health care for transgender youth. The brief argues that the health care ban is rooted in hate and violates the Fourteenth Amendment. By placing the bill within the broader context of nationwide attacks against LGBTQ people, the brief makes clear that Tennessee’s ban is grounded in discrimination rather than concern for the health and well-being of transgender youth. This has specifically led to significant harm to Black transgender people. https://lnkd.in/gUdFmS7A

We are so incredibly grateful to Emilio, Gina, Jaxsyn, Shawn, Kayden, Paris, and Tyler, the brave TNGD youth contributors who shared their experiences and recommendations for Safe Havens II. In this time of increasing hostility and violence against transgender people, it’s our duty and our honor to uplift their voices. Percy, a plaintiff in our case against Iowa’s “Don’t Say LGBTQ+” and banned books law, has a powerful reminder of what’s at stake for young people as they head back to school. Like Percy says, we have to remember that “all queer youth are children, just wanting space to discover ourselves and books to inspire us.” 💖 LGBTQ+ students deserve to feel safe and welcomed in schools and see themselves in their lessons. Lambda Legal will continue to fight for full lived and legal equality so that LGBTQ+ young people learn about rather than experience discrimination in the classroom. ⚠️ Transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse (TNGD) youth are under attack by state legislatures around the country, and those who are currently experiencing homelessness or are involved with out-of-home systems like foster care are even more vulnerable. Currently, 28 states have harmful and discriminatory laws and policies in place specifically targeting TNGD youth in health care access, school curricula, parental notification requirements, restroom and facility access, and sports participation. Meanwhile, only four states have laws that explicitly seek to promote familial and community acceptance and prevent system involvement for LGBTQ+ and TNGD youth. We owe TNGD youth better. It’s time to demand change and advocate for inclusive policies that protect our most vulnerable. 📢 BREAKING: In a landmark upcoming Supreme Court case, transgender adolescents, their families, and a medical provider from Tennessee have urged SCOTUS to block a state law banning medical care for trans youth as a violation of the U.S. Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause. Tennessee’s law does not ban medical care for all Tennessee youth, but solely for transgender Tennessee youth, which is clearly discriminatory. Since 2021, 24 states have banned medical care for transgender youth. Every family should have the freedom to love and support their child, and medical care properly belongs with families and their doctors, not with politicians. Now, it’s more crucial than ever for SCOTUS to step in and protect the rights of trans youth to live healthy, fulfilling lives. Stand with trans youth. Share this post and let’s make sure their voices are heard loud and clear! 🗣️ 🔗 More info at https://lnkd.in/ehQEwHBT #ProtectTransYouth #TransRights #Trans #LGBTQ #TransRightsAreHumanRights #TransIsBeautiful #LGBTQRights #GenderAffirming
