In 1949, Marcel Breuer built a summer cottage for his family in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. The simple structure consists of a rectangular box on posts, with a cantilevered screened porch that juts out from the house “like a camera on a tripod,” said Breuer. Simple materials wearing the patina of weather and time add to the cottage’s informal feeling. Several walls are thick with layers of paint, resulting from Breuer’s fascination with the sensory and psychological effects of different colors. And if those frequently repainted walls could talk, they’d share stories about the influential designers and artists who were frequent guests here, including Florence Knoll, the Saarinen family, Alexander Calder, Saul Steinberg, and many others. Marcel Breuer spent four decades tinkering with a simple rustic cottage on Cape Cod. It was remote, uninsulated, and when first built it had no electricity or running water. And yet, it was where he felt most at home. The Cape Cod Modern House Trust recently purchased the property to ensure its protection. Restoration has begun and what they are discovering is delighting architects and scholars. Architects Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich designed a home for the Tugendhat family in 1929. Located in Brno, Czech Republic, the villa is a celebrated example of functionalist architecture, featuring austere concrete construction, exterior walls of glass, and open interiors filled with natural light. A work of total architecture, Mies also specified everything for the interior, from light switches to furnishings. One of the pieces he designed, used in several rooms of the house, was the Feder-Sessel (“spring chair” in English) that became known as the Tugendhat Chair.
