Kristina Westbrook, who heads our Wastewater Treatment Division's Recycled Water Program in the Resource Recovery Unit, recently received the 2024 WateReuse Pacific Northwest President’s Award! Kristina is a founding member of the Pacific Northwest section of WateReuse, the nation’s leading advocate for increased water reuse, and she has also served as president and held various other leadership roles. At King County, she's been instrumental in expanding the use of recycled water to new customers and natural areas, providing a drought-proof and sustainable source of water for irrigation and cooling. King County Parks awarded the City of SeaTac a 2023 King County Parks Levy grant for $258,196 to install lighting at their BMX race course.    SeaTac BMX held their first race under the lights last week and the crowd was all smiles! Kids and parents alike were blown away by the newly illuminated course. These lights will allow SeaTac BMX to expand their hours, operate later into the year, and host more national competitions.    Our grant programs are designed to increase access and equity by supporting projects that enhance parks, trails, recreational facilities, and programming across King County. This is a great example of King County Parks Levy funding making a real difference!    Thanks to everyone involved in making this project a reality. We celebrated a record release of over 12,000 young Lake Sammamish kokanee salmon! Thanks to our incredible partners and the innovative practice of extended rearing, these rare native fish have a better chance to survive to adulthood and create the next generation of unique kokanee salmon.  Each kokanee’s journey—from hatching, to growing in Lake Sammamish, and returning to the spawning grounds—is a step toward restoring this species. New research shows a promising future for a healthier kokanee population through continued stream habitat restoration and work to improve conditions in the lake.  This is an ongoing effort, with community partners and experts working together to bring kokanee back from the brink. KING 5 Media Group local news reporter and meteorologist Leah Pezzetti recently joined us along the Snoqualmie River to see a swiftwater training session with members of King County's Flood Patrol group.   River flooding is King County's most-common natural disaster, impacting King County communities every year, typically during the October through April flood season.    During moderate or higher flood events, two-person King County flood patrol crews are in the field to monitor flood conditions, inspect levees and structures that stabilize riverbanks, and report their observations to floodplain managers as part of the county’s overall work to help protect people and their communities.   This training session, conducted by in-house subject matter experts, was intended to give flood patrol members the vital safety skills they need to perform their critical role of observing conditions during flood events.   Flood patrols operate seven days a week when activated and is one of the many services provided from the King County Flood Warning Center that is funded by the King County Flood Control District. https://lnkd.in/gwnB7meS
