  • Phylicia Adams has been a nurse extern at UK King’s Daughters for three years. She started in the float pool, but quickly fell in love with the non-stop pace and adrenaline rush that comes with working in the Emergency Department. In her early career as nurse extern, Phylicia applied for the UK King’s Daughters tuition reimbursement program for team members. As a single mom, this helped to offset the costs of nursing school and she just graduated this May. Starting this month, Phylicia will continue her career with an ED fellowship. The fellowship allows her to transition from a nurse extern to a new nurse without feeling lost. Participants get classroom time where they review the things they learned in nursing school and apply it to real life situations in the ED. It ultimately makes them feel more comfortable about the skills that they learn, helping to make them a more successful nurse. “I wouldn’t choose anywhere else in the hospital to stay,” Phylicia said. “Our ED allows more opportunity for you to experience things and helped me to take what I was learning in nursing school and apply it in real life. We have fantastic nurses and providers that explain things and teach it to you so that you understand. It makes you a better student because it’s not just in your textbook and you see things first hand. I love the atmosphere and the people I work with. We work well as a team in big and little situations and we all have each other’s backs.” Our Emergency Department is growing, with our new building expected to open in 2025. • Igniting young minds! Our UK King's Daughters team spent the day with students part of the Project IGNITE Summer STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Camp, opening the doors of knowledge and opportunities to fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders from Ashland. Students dove into a world where STEM education is power, uncovering a vast spectrum of career paths at UK King's Daughters. The day was filled with hands-on experiences in pharmacy, respiratory and wound care, alongside career talks and exciting virtual simulations.

  • We are thrilled to celebrate the graduation of 12 nurse residents from UKKD’s nurse residency program. Their hard work and dedication have brought them to this milestone, and we couldn't be more excited for their future as they step into their roles as registered nurses. Our residency program, designed for RNs with 12 months or less experience, offers a comprehensive blend of professional development topics, hands-on learning, and mentorship. Guided by subject matter experts and supported by our state-of-the-art simulation lab, our residents have built the skills and relationships that will serve them throughout their nursing careers. We are also proud to share that our program is on the path to accreditation through the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP), underscoring our commitment to excellence in nursing education. A special shoutout to our fantastic graduates: Back row: Brett Barrett, Matt Whitt, Hailee Lemaster, Carolina Llanos, Emily Burger, Erica Hampton. • Mason Dempsey has been a nurse in the UK King’s Daughters Emergency Department for nearly two years. His passion for patient care comes from when he was really young and his mother was being treated for breast cancer. Seeing how the nurses cared for her and provided comfort to the family inspired him to choose nursing as his future career. Always a go getter and loving a challenge, the Emergency Department is an excellent fit for Mason. Every day is different and you have the most opportunity to see a variety of patients and provide different types of patient care. He thinks that all new nurses should spend a year or two in the ED to help develop their nursing skills. “It’s a really good entry step for those who are unsure of what they want to do. You may find that you want to stay in the ED, or you take care of a specific patient with a specific illness and you may want to go into that,” Mason said. “You not only use your critical thinking skills, but you learn how to interact with the healthcare team. It’s something that’s missed out on as a new nurse when you’re thrown into the field. The ED helps give young nurses the opportunity to develop their voice, advocate for the patient, and speak to a provider about a concern.” Our Emergency Department is growing, with our new building expected to open in 2025. • Lauren Griffith worked in mental health for over 20 years and was ready for a change. With a bachelor’s degree in social work and a master’s degree in education and mental health counseling, she wanted to stay in a hospital setting but in a different role. She found exactly what she was looking for when she became a family liaison in the UK King’s Daughters Emergency Department nearly three years ago. Lauren is an advocate for the patient – checking on them, addressing any complaints or concerns, talking to providers and nurses for any updates, and seeing if they need anything to make their experience better. She still uses her counseling skills to help deescalate situations and communicate with patients and families to find out what’s really going on. “Many times, they just want to be heard and have someone who will take the time to sit and listen to them and help them to understand what is going on,” Lauren said. “My favorite part is when the patients are happy and watching their anxiety go down. Showing compassion and empathy goes a long way. King’s Daughters really cares about their team members and patients. The collaborative effort in the ED makes it a great environment to work in. Seeing the difference we make for our patients makes it all worthwhile.” Our Emergency Department is growing, with our new building expected to open in 2025. • Eli Lewis began his career at UK King’s Daughters in the ED residency program, and became a nurse in the Emergency Department back in December. He had worked as a server during nursing school, which helped him to prepare for the flow and quick pace of the Emergency Department. “My favorite part is the adrenaline rush you get when trying to help people quickly,” Eli said. “I love the problem-solving aspect and figuring out what is wrong with the patient. If you like a challenge and like to think critically, you should definitely give the ED a shot.” Our Emergency Department is growing, with our new building expected to open in 2025. • Brandi Compliment, RN, loved working in the UK King’s Daughters emergency room, but wanted to try something new. She left in December 2023 to become a travel nurse, but quickly learned that it was not the right fit for her. “I missed the people I worked with,” Brandi said. “I was hesitant in the beginning, and knew within a month that I was ready to come back to King’s Daughters. I stuck out the 13-week contract and returned in March. I made the best decision for me and my family.” If you would be interested in joining the UK King’s Daughters team, visit MyKDCareer.com.
