We're thrilled to share Architectural Record's June 2024 cover story featuring the newly renovated Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC. Reopening to the public on June 21, the Folger houses the world's largest collection of Shakespeare's printed works. Over the past ten years, KieranTimberlake has partnered with Folger to provide strategic planning services, culminating in an expanded site and reimagined visitor experience. To complement the 1932 landmarked building by Paul Cret, KieranTimberlake went below, literally digging beneath the structure to create a more equitable and welcoming experience for all. “This is a building of great rooms,” said Partner Stephen Kieran. “We modernized the three historic rooms, but in a silent way. And we created the gardens as outdoor rooms.” The 6,000 square foot addition includes a lobby, exhibition halls, learning lab, gift shop, and offices, while vastly improving accessibility and circulation. “This project offers an alternative—without any changes to Cret's original elevations—and a way forward for institutions seeking to grow but contending with limitations,” they write. Today we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of Dilworth Park's reopening! With nearly four acres of space at the intersection of Philadelphia’s major arts, cultural, and business districts, our 2014 transformation made Dilworth Park a welcoming and vital public space—destination, crossroads, and place of tranquility in the heart of the city. The renovation of Dilworth Park re-captures city founder William Penn’s original vision for a place of civic engagement at the center of the city and welcomes nearly 10 million visitors annually. To celebrate this milestone, Center City District is hosting a series of public programming, including an extended Live @ Lunch concert with Patrice Hawthorne, an interactive community chalk mural, and more. Visit their website for details. 📷 We Film Philly and Center City District, James Ewing/OTTO

On September 19, Principal Jon McCandlish and Associate Ryan Wall will share insights from 2300 Market at the Facades+ Philadelphia symposium, presented by The Architect's Newspaper. Located within the last remnants of the historic industrial fabric of Center City Philadelphia’s West Market corridor, 2300 Market is an 8-story, 225,000 square-foot life sciences research and discovery facility developed by Breakthrough Properties. The project embraces adaptive reuse and rehabilitation of an existing brick building and reconstruction of an adjoining building’s terracotta facade. In their session, Jon and Ryan will discuss the engagement and enabling process, and highlight some of the key visual and technical considerations undertaken for both the historic and new facades. 🏙️ 2300 Market: Adaptive Reuse Strategy for Historic Facades 📅 Thursday, September 19 at 2:15pm 📍 Hilton Philadelphia at Penn's Landing 🎟 Register now: https://lnkd.in/eTYgRtt8 Tishman Speyer | Bellco Capital | BR+A Consulting Engineers | Hunter Roberts Construction - Philadelphia | Owen Steel Company Inc. | Healy Long & Jevin, Inc

We just renewed our pledge to participate in Lights Out, an initiative by Bird Safe Philly to prevent bird-building collisions. With fall migration starting up, join us in turning off unnecessary lights from midnight until 6am, now until November 15. Bird Safe Philly reports that for one participating building, preliminary data showed bird collision injuries/fatalities dropped 70% since 2020! In addition to adjusting your lights, utilizing frit patterns can create visual density that birds can see. However, not all frits are created equally—they must have high enough contrast and narrow enough spacing to be effective. We take this one step further by creating functional patterns that also complement the overall facade design. The result is visually interesting for birds and humans alike. 📷: Schnuck Pavilion at Washington University in St. Louis by Peter Aaron
