K N O W • T H E I R • N A M E S In 1999, as a young industrial engineer, fresh out of Georgia Institute of Technology, I sat at the desk of my plant manager, Mr. Steve Alford. I told him that I wanted his job one day. He said, “ok that sounds great, come walk with me”. We started walking around the Elm City Plant in Lagrange Ga. That plant had hundreds of people who worked in it. As we walked around the plant, Mr. Alford started asking me the names of the people who were in my department and others on the main pieces of machinery. I knew all of their names. Every now and again, he would ask me the names of individuals I didn’t know. The names I did not know were the names of the custodians. Mr. Alford knew the names of every person who worked in his plant. At the end of the walk, he said “if you want my job one day, you need to understand that everyone is important who works in your plant, and you should know all of their names”. I never forgot that lesson. Today, 25 years later and 3.5 years removed from the airport, I see Ms. Debra Woods, as I am walking through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. She is one the custodians who works hard for ABM Industries to keep our airport looking good and smelling good. A N • A M A Z I N G • H U M A N Everyone should get to know Dr. Sherman Green Green. He is an amazing human being. There are people who God allows to cross your path to “teach you” when they actually think they are learning from you. Dr. Sherman Green thank you for blessing me and allowing me to share my story. Thank you for also giving me an opportunity to see myself through God’s lens. I hope my story helps bring inspiration and hope to a couple of heartbeats.
