Retrieval is continuing to evolve, and it’s playing a major role in making large language models (LLMs) more effective for real-world tasks, such as responding to RFPs. Anthropic’s Contextual Retrieval method (https://lnkd.in/dVrZayka), which combines traditional techniques like BM25 with modern embeddings, and increases the richness of the pre-processing (similar to the recent DocETL https://www.docetl.org/) is a good example of how retrieval accuracy is improving. By capturing both exact matches and broader semantic meanings, this method reduces retrieval failures and leads to more relevant, higher-quality results. For complex use cases like RFPs (and many others), the ability to go beyond traditional document search is critical. While it’s useful to have an LLM help with fuzzy searches like, “Where in this document do they talk about compliance?” or polish sections of text, the real long-term value comes from building data pipelines. These pipelines can automate the extraction of industry-specific factors, competitive analysis, and past performance metrics—creating dynamic workflows that allow the LLM to generate customized responses based on this rich input. Converting unstructured to structured. The real differentiator with LLMs is their ability to handle variability that deterministic systems struggle with. Traditional rule-based approaches would be brittle and hard to maintain because they can’t adapt to the nuanced, shifting priorities that arise in tasks like RFPs. LLMs, on the other hand, excel because they can incorporate a wide range of factors—from industry trends to relationship history—into cohesive outputs. And they have far more breadth beyond the domain than human experts. This adaptability is useful not only for RFPs but for contract analysis, market research, software development, and more. With many models with increasingly powerful handling of long context windows, you can interact with sizable, complex documents while integrating APIs and external data sources to automatically enrich responses, helping streamline many other complex tasks. This isn’t about "zero-shot" learning; these models improve over time, whether through fine-tuning or few-shot learning. You can build systems where LLMs become integral to responding to RFPs dynamically, and these methods can be applied to other complex workflows as well. It’s no longer about just document search—it’s about using LLMs to automate nuanced processes that used to require extensive manual effort. For businesses, this means moving beyond using LLMs as simple q&a tools to a space where they actively help curate knowledge to construct and refine responses based on extracted structures in source and target, whether for RFPs or similar tasks. Shameless plug, if you're working on tools or apps in this area and struggling with balancing data management, privacy and data sovereignty, operational stability, check us out at www.kamiwaza.ai

With the recent release of the Reflection fine-tune of LLaMA 3.1 and the debut of ChatGPT 4.o1 "Strawberry", we’re witnessing a transformative leap in AI’s cognitive abilities. These advancements are firmly planting us in the realm of what Daniel Kahneman describes in his seminal work, Thinking, Fast and Slow, as System 1 and System 2 thinking. In AI terms, we’re seeing an evolution from instinctual, fast processing (System 1) to deeper, more deliberate reasoning and analysis (System 2). There’s even an active challenge circulating, where developers are pushing GPT-4.o1 to generate the longest possible response that requires System 2 thinking. Kahneman’s System 1 represents quick, instinctual thinking—perfect for tasks that require immediate response, like simple classifications or chat responses. This is where traditional AI models excel. But now, with the fine-tuning of Reflection LLaMA 3.1 and advanced versions like ChatGPT 4.o1, we’re seeing AI stepping into System 2—the domain of slow, deliberate, and logical thought. We're no longer asking AI to just provide quick answers; we’re demanding reasoning, analysis, and synthesis from multiple data points. These models are beginning to perform higher-order thinking that mirrors the way humans deliberate on complex problems. The rise of what I call Agentic Services—AI services that move from action-based automation to deep System 2 reasoning. Imagine AI agents not just answering questions but proactively exploring data, analyzing complex interactions, and offering new insights—all without human intervention. - Data-Driven Decision Making: Businesses will benefit from AI that not only processes data but thinks critically about it, providing strategic insights that go beyond what human analysts can discern. - Autonomous Research: In sectors like healthcare and drug discovery, AI agents will explore data sets, run hypotheses, and present new paths for research that would take humans years to uncover. - Complex Automation: AI agents will autonomously complete complex workflows** in industries like finance, logistics, and supply chain management, continuously learning and improving outcomes. The journey from System 1 to System 2 thinking represents a watershed moment in AI’s development. We’re entering a phase where reasoning, rather than mere action, will drive innovation. As more people realize the depth and complexity these models can project, AI will move from being a tool to becoming an independent contributor to human progress. On September 25th, I’ll be speaking at AccessWave’s Data & AI Leadership Exchange in NYC. Join me for an open Q&A panel where I will dive into the impact of this in the Enterprise. Today, we’ve got some big news from the Department of Energy (DOE) that could make a real impact to America's thirst for power including what's needed to stay in front with AI development! The DOE released a report that’s not so much revolutionary as it is practical. They examined what would happen if we expanded power generation at existing nuclear sites, as well as revisited old, retired sites. The results are nothing short of stunning. Currently, the United States has 54 operating nuclear sites and 11 retired nuclear sites. The DOE explored what would happen if we upgraded and expanded power generation at these locations. The findings? These sites alone could generate an additional 95 gigawatts (GW) of clean, zero-emission power. That's a game-changer. But the DOE didn't stop there. They also looked at 17 sites that were cleared for nuclear power generation but were never developed. Adding new nuclear reactors to these locations could bring another 24 GW of power to the grid. These locations, having already been vetted for nuclear generation, represent low-hanging fruit in terms of deployment and regulatory hurdles. Here’s where things get even more interesting. The DOE proposed building new nuclear plants next to existing coal plants. Why is this such a big deal? For one, the infrastructure is already in place. The power grid that once transmitted electricity from coal could be easily repurposed for nuclear energy. Additionally, many of the regulatory and Not In My Backyard (NIMBY) issues have already been resolved at these sites, making them prime candidates for expansion. And the numbers? Building nuclear power stations next to coal plants would add 174 GW of energy to the U.S. grid. When you combine all these possibilities—upgrading existing sites, reopening old ones, and adding nuclear next to coal plants—we're looking at over 200 GW of power generation by 2050. And the kicker? With the rapid rise of AI, these developments couldn’t come at a better time. AI, with its massive computational power requirements, is already putting immense pressure on our energy grid. This trend is only going to accelerate as technologies like Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) with single training clusters needing or exceeding 1GW in the next 5-10 years. Countries like China are already pulling ahead in clean power generation, and they’re leveraging this advantage to fuel their AI ambitions. If the U.S. is to keep pace, we need a new, bold approach to energy—one that leverages our current infrastructure, sidesteps regulatory bottlenecks, and taps into the potential of nuclear energy.
