Happy Plaidurday from the KMI Space Rangers! Bugsy Sailor is the official Unofficial Ambassador of the U.P. He has embarked on various personal passion projects heavily revolving around the Upper Peninsula and Yooper lifestyle. Notably, Bugsy founded Plaidurday; a national holiday that celebrates none other than plaid! KMI is proud to wear plaid and be based in the U.P. because in the end, we are all connected by a common thread.

In humanity's pursuit of progress, one thing often lingers in our wake: debris. Just like Earth, space is littered with the remnants of past missions—from rocket bodies to tool bags hurtling through our orbits at 17,000 mph. What happens when all this space junk poses a serious threat to active satellites, spacecraft, or even the ISS? Michael Lundy answers this complex, urgent, and daily challenge for space operators in our latest KMI column. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/gvB6_P6Q

Thank you, Arkisys, for leading this exciting study and bringing together such a talented team! KMI is proud to contribute our REACCH technology for de-orbit augmentation and on-demand commercial services alongside fellow innovators like ThermaSat Inc., Parabilis Space Technologies, Inc., and Revolution Space. We’re eager to collaborate in developing sustainable solutions that will shape the future of in-orbit services and space logistics while we work towards #KeepingSpaceClearForAll
Arkisys is excited to kickoff a short burn study effort on de-orbit augmentation and on-demand commercial services for the Space Development Agency! Led by Arkisys the team includes Kall Morris Inc, ThermaSat Inc., Parabilis Space Technologies, Inc. and Revolution Space. SDA is interested in capabilities for on-demand de-orbit as a commercially available service. “The team’s goal is to dive into the various ground launch and space deployed options available combining the unique talents each team member brings” says Rahul Rughani, Ph.D., Chief Systems Engineer at Arkisys. “Looking at the Delta-V required both from either ground or from an orbital platform will identify multiple options we can offer to SDA to consider.” Arkisys has made strong progress in showcasing use cases for a long duration space testbed that is by design able to grow into a larger structure itself on orbit. “Space is a throwaway culture today” says David A Barnhart, founder and CEO. “Every other platform on Earth can extend life, revenue and new uses through new parts, the right tools and a garage to work in. But not Space. We are fundamentally changing the equation to make that possible … today” says Barnhart. https://lnkd.in/gKaSMtpG

Join us in welcoming the newest team member at KMI, Sheena Winder, as our latest DOD SkillBridge intern. Sheena is an alumnus of the Air Force Institute of Technology where she studied Material Science. She spends her “free” time as an Uber driver and personal assistant to 3 awesome kids. Sadly, they do not get to spend as much time on snow-covered mountains as she would prefer. We are excited as our team continues growing, working towards #KeepingSpaceClearForAll.

What's in a name? More than you might think. KMI's first spacecraft needed a title that not only symbolized its mission but also paid homage to the myths of old. After much debate, we landed on "Laelaps"—a name rooted in Greek legend. But what does a mythic hound, destined to catch everything it chases, have to do with space? Discover the full story behind Laelaps, our pursuit of space safety, and how the legends of the past inspire our future. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/gVkUcfM3

Space is cool, space robots are cooler, and doing space sustainability with space robots is even cooler, which is why I’m excited to announce my recent completion of the Robotic Actuation internship I just wrapped up at Kall Morris Inc! My work mainly consisted of exploring new actuation methods for the REACCH mechanism being developed by KMI (essentially a robot octopus to grab unprepared objects in orbit) and prototyping a new set of robotic arms to test with. I also ended up helping out with a myriad of activities related to the ISS REACCH technology demonstrator, an Astrobee payload, from payload construction to having the opportunity to design and fabricate some of the material test plates that will get used in capture testing. Finally, a huge shout out to all the space rangers at KMI as well as the folks at Innovate Marquette SmartZone for helping me feel at home both at work and in Marquette. I cannot stress enough how much of a pleasure it was to work, interact, and help with #KeepingSpaceClearForAll with these folks.
