In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy for leaders to get caught up in the day-to-day. But as we move into Q4, it’s crucial to ask: Are we spending enough time focusing on the future? In his latest Forbes article, Dev Patnaik shares a powerful tool called the “time diet” to help leaders assess how much time they’re dedicating to the future vs. the present or past. Future-focused thinking is essential for staying ahead of emerging trends and threats, yet many leaders spend only a small fraction of their time on it. Check out the article, and let us know: How are you carving out time to shape the future of your business? #timediet #strategy #business #futurefocused

It’s easy for leaders to get caught up in the present, especially during the fourth quarter when calendars are packed with year-end reviews, budgeting, and next year’s plans. But in our rapidly changing world, it’s crucial to ask: Are we spending enough time thinking about the future? In my latest Forbes article, I reflect on the need for leaders to focus on what’s coming next. If we don’t carve out time for future-focused thinking—on new technologies, competitive threats, or evolving opportunities—we risk falling behind. The best leaders I know prioritize the future, even when it feels like the present demands all their attention. A simple tool like a “time diet” can help retrain your brain to focus on what’s ahead, and it’s as straightforward as tracking how much time you spend thinking about the past, present, and future. You might be surprised by what you find. If we don’t feel a little guilty about how much time we’re spending on the future, we’re probably not doing it enough. https://lnkd.in/gEeqJXd8

The sustainability journey is as much about mindset as it is about logistics. In the latest episode of The Jump Podcast, Michelle Loret de Mola and Dev Patnaik are joined by Jump's own Ryan Baum to discuss how businesses can unlock growth while meeting sustainability goals. 🎙️Key Takeaways: Shift the Sustainability Mindset: Too often, sustainability is seen as a sacrifice. But businesses need to approach it as an opportunity to grow, both in terms of market share and revenue. Sustainability Must Work for the Business: If sustainability initiatives are viewed as luxuries, they will be the first to go during tough times. Businesses must integrate them into their core strategy for long-term success. Profit and Sustainability Are Not Mutually Exclusive: By aligning sustainability efforts with business goals, companies can both meet environmental objectives and create new revenue streams. How is your company approaching sustainability? Do you see it as a growth opportunity, or something to prioritize only when times are good? Colleen Murray’s take on using culture to drive strategy has us excited to turn energy into action following the Jump Offsite. In a world grappling with climate change and the future of AI, it’s leaders who prioritize cultural transformation that will empower their organizations to make bold, and impactful, moves. It’s clear that as leaders, we must be dedicated to creating environments where future-focused thinking and transformational action can thrive. Jean Oelwang's insights on the power of collaboration and Annie Murphy Paul’s push for thinking beyond traditional methods highlight how we can take steps towards creating a unified cultural focus, while enhancing creativity and problem-solving across teams. The learnings from the Offsite just keep coming. If you weren’t able to be with us in Napa, take a moment to feed your head with these takeaways. #Futurefocused #culture #innovation #Strategy

I recently had the pleasure of participating in the #JumpOffsite, our annual gathering for future-focused leaders. Over the course of three days, this group experienced inspirational talks, connections with their peers, and coaching in intimate, closed-door discussions. As our group reflected on what we – and our organizations – can do to take on daunting global issues like climate change and the future of AI, I kept coming back to one key theme; culture. Here are three tips I took away for how companies can use culture to drive strategy forward:

We couldn't agree more with Ryan Baum's take on balancing pessimism and optimism in leadership. In our rapidly changing landscape, senior leaders often find themselves overwhelmed—caught in a whirlwind of uncertainty and reacting to challenges rather than shaping our futures. However, the Jump Offsite brought a powerful metaphor to mind: our current struggles can be seen as the labor pains preceding transformation. While fear can drive immediate action, the hope of what's to come sustains motivation. By strategically integrating both, we can create a dynamic environment that fosters resilience. There's so much power in knowing that the future is not predetermined; we have the ability to shape it. If you weren't able to make the Offsite, jump in here to join the conversation. #leadership #futurefocused #strategy #balance

For years I've heard two seemingly conflicting things about motivation. One says that the best way to motivate yourself and others is with optimism and vision, because it gives you something to believe in and strive for. The other says the best way to motivate yourself and others is pessimism and fear (FOMO), because you trigger loss aversion which is a big driver of action. So . . . which one is right? This year at the Jump Offsite, I got some great insight into how to wield these powerful motivating forces. Here are a few of the things I learned.

Why is it critical for execs to take on an editor-in-chief mindset? Michelle Loret de Mola shares what she's seeing and hearing that explains the need. We love to see all the connections made and the moments of inspiration (thanks Bob Sutton for this one!) at the Jump Offsite.

There’s always that one moment when everything clicks—this year at the Jump Offsite, Bob Sutton shared an idea that really stuck with me: leaders as Editors-in-Chief. It made me look at leadership differently, and it’s shaped how I think ever since. AI, automation, and digital tools were supposed to make things easier, but now they’re adding more complexity. As leaders, it’s about editing—choosing what actually deserves our focus and what we need to let go of. Cutting through tech clutter is part of that, so we can focus on what really moves the needle. But it’s not just about tech. As Janine Benyus and Annie Murphy Paul pointed out, we need to think about how we shape our environments—both digital and physical—so they help our teams think better, learn more, and get inspired. For those who were there, I know this idea resonated with you, too. Dev Patnaik Ryan Baum I'm thinking of you ;) If you weren’t, here’s a quick take on what had us all thinking... #leadership #AI #strategy #innovation #JumpOffsite

This week’s Jump Podcast is a special one. It was recorded LIVE at the Offsite last week with an audience of 50 influential growth leaders. Dev Patnaik and Michelle Loret de Mola record it as a love letter to our future selves, reminding us to take our learnings and make changes with urgency. In this episode, Dev and Michelle share their top takeaways from the Jump Offsite and what leaders need to start doing to win. 🎙️Takeaways in Technology, Culture, and Business: -Shop in Your Own Stores: Tech executives need to constantly play with their own AI tools to develop intuition for how it works and what decisions they should make. -Design for Everyone: In many different industries, Inclusivity is the new baseline. Including all types of people is now the expectation baked into designing businesses, products, and operations. -Be an Editor in Chief: To be a great leader, you have to view your role as less of a commander and more as an editor. Lean into editing people’s time, attention, and spaces in more effective ways. What do you think? Planning, strategy, and vision are top things businesses need to get clear on and establish before anything else. But many don’t realize the differences between them and how they relate to each other. “Planning is when you know what you’re going to do when. Strategy is when you know what might kill you and what you’re going to do about it. And vision is when you know why you should even exist.” -Dev Patnaik Check out Dev Patnaik’s latest Forbes article on the importance of having a separate strategy and plan, and how they feed into each other to help businesses win.

Many companies fall into trouble when they do “strategic planning” because they’re conflating two separate actions that should stand alone. Corporate planning season is upon us. Execs are getting ready to establish the new year’s goals, metrics, and resource allocations. But many fall into the trap of focusing too much on planning, and not enough on strategy. When you focus solely on execution, you end up copying the strategy of everyone around you. In my latest Forbes article, I point out the importance of businesses having a clear winning strategy that informs their plans for the future. Planning is when you know what you’re going to do when. It’s about templates and tradeoffs and the implementation of a strategy. Strategy is when you know what might kill you and what you’re going to do about it. It’s about insights and ideas and focusing on how your business can win in an uncertain world over the next 5-7 years. Vision is when you know why you should even exist. Leaders should continue their planning sessions while acknowledging it is just planning. And dedicate separate times to develop clear strategies and visions, too. https://lnkd.in/gwJVk2sp

Believe it or not, businesses have a lot to learn from the natural world around us. In the latest episode of The Jump Podcast, Dev Patnaik and Michelle Loret de Mola are joined by Janine Benyus – biologist, consultant, and author – to talk about how much we can learn from nature and biology when it comes to designing things like sustainable products and partnerships. 🎙️Episode Highlights: - Innovate with Biomimicry: Mirroring biological processes in product design is a creative way to solve business challenges. For example, designing beam structures based on bone-like lattice composition reduces transportation and material costs, while maintaining structural strength. - Form Mutualistic Partnerships: Similar to the relationship between bees and flowers, business partnerships should be beneficial for both parties. We can learn to design business partnerships based on how organisms interact and benefit from the other’s behaviors. - Support Each Other Underneath the Surface: In nature, competing organisms, like trees competing for sunlight, actually share nutrients with others in their network through their roots. Although competitors, businesses can find ways to support each other while also pushing for differentiation. - Come Together in Hard Times: In stressful situations, humans and organisms tend to cooperate and come together. The tougher times are, the more mutualisms are found. In tough economic situations, businesses should find ways to lift each other up instead of fight to the death. 🔗 Spotify --> https://lnkd.in/gkbSYnDx 🔗 Apple --> https://lnkd.in/gK-CerAS #growth #innovation #strategy #growthstrategy #biology #biomimicry #competition #partnerships #sustainability

We’re less than one week away from the Jump Offsite. The Jump Offsite is an opportunity for future-focused leaders to surround themselves with ambitious people like them. Psychologists have found that most of the population is past or present focused. Only 16% of us frame our reality by what’s going to happen. As CEO Dev Patnaik told us, it can be very hard for future-focused people to succeed in their companies because a lot of the people around them don’t think like them. Their ideas for long-term opportunities are often seen as distractions, and their warnings of long-term threats are put on the back-burner. It’s easy to get frustrated and start thinking, “Maybe I’m the problem. Maybe I need to focus on what’s in front of me.” But that would be a big mistake. Because companies need people like this to make sure they have a future at all. These future-focused leaders need a way to sustain themselves. That’s why we created the Jump Offsite over twenty years ago: to give these leaders a place to recharge, reimagine, and reconnect with others who are like them. Every year, we spend a few days with leaders like this in Napa. But not hundreds of leaders. We keep it small at around 50 guests who stay in the beautiful cottages at the Carneros resort. We have a series of talks by experts in the fields of business, culture and technology and carefully curated breakout groups to go deep on topics together. Leaders can be a vulnerable with each other as if they’ve known each other for years. Leaders leave the Offsite feeling rejuvenated and ready to inspire growth and change at their companies. Stay tuned to hear what we learn!
