Clinical and support resources for Jewish LGBTQ youth, with a focus on teens from orthodox homes.

About us

JQY supports and empowers LGBTQ youth in the Jewish community, with a special focus on those from Orthodox, Chassidic, and Sephardi/Mizrachi homes. JQY promotes the mental health, emotional well-being and physical safety of these individuals by providing national crisis, communal, and advocacy resources, as well as in-person support programming in New York. We envision a reality in which LGBTQ youth from all Jewish communities have access to resources that allow them to feel safe, welcomed, and celebrated. We dream of a world where no young person, regardless of the religious affiliation of their upbringing, suffers from rejection, isolation, or shame.

Organizational-wide closures are a proven practice that have been utilized across sectors to promote habits of wellbeing, retention and productivity, and combat burn-out, attrition and exhaustion. Rest-based interventions, such as this, are a critical part of equity work, defining organizational culture and giving all team members agency to help make their day-to-day feel sustainable. The more we normalize rest as an integral part of the workplace (not just an added bonus for a lucky few!), the more effective and sustainable our talent and organizations will be. #futureofwork #organizationalculture #breakweek #restequalshope #orgwidevacation

"Wearing a Star of David necklace or a yarmulke today feels exactly the same to me as hanging a rainbow flag or sporting a Pride pin. Both are acts of resilience and expressions of identity in the face of adversity. They send a clear message: We are stronger than you think and we are not going anywhere." - Rachael Fried, Executive Director of JQY

Meet Meredith Zylberberg, our Jewish Queer Youth Champion! Meredith Zylberberg is a licensed social worker with more than 15 years experience working with families, children and youth, and people with disabilities, as well as a decade in the Jewish nonprofit world. As a senior manager of strategic planning and grants at UJA-Federation of New York, Meredith stewards the mental health and disability inclusion portfolios, working with a wide range of agencies and institutions to meet the needs of the New York Jewish community. Meredith has been a steadfast champion of JQY since introduced in 2017. She was instrumental in securing JQY’s first stop-gap funding, ensuring the Drop-in Center remained open beyond its initial pilot program. Meredith has worked to raise awareness of JQY within the Jewish nonprofit sector and among community leaders. Her tireless efforts have helped secure over $1 million to support JQY’s mental health initiatives, including the hiring of a full-time psychologist and the development of JQY’s clinical program. Meredith is passionate about social justice and tries to instill the same passion in her two young children. When not working, she enjoys spending time with her husband, her children, and their two big rescue dogs. Join us in celebrating Pride and the tremendous efforts of our honoree, Meredith by placing an ad in her honor here https://jqy.org/nachas/

Meet our Community Trailblazer, Jayson Littman! Raised in an Orthodox Jewish home in the Breuer’s community of Washington Heights in Upper Manhattan, Jayson had to navigate the complexities of reconciling his LGBT and Orthodox Jewish identities. After enduring five years of conversion therapy, Jayson came out as gay and founded Hebro, a social group for gay Jews in New York City. Through Hebro, Jayson has united thousands of gay Jews and established partnerships with organizations such as OneTable, Birthright, and Honeymoon Israel, ensuring a welcoming space for LGBTQ Jews within the broader Jewish community. In addition to his work with Hebro, Jayson serves on the Board of Congregation Beit Simchat Torah, New York’s LGBTQ synagogue. Professionally, Jayson is the Director of Events & Protocol for Mayor Eric Adams. He previously held a similar position under Mayor Bill de Blasio and served as a Senior Advisor for LGBTQ Community Affairs. Jayson has united thousands of gay Jews and established partnerships ensuring a welcoming space for LGBTQ Jews within the broader Jewish community. Join us in celebrating Pride and the tremendous efforts of our honoree, Jayson, and sponsor and ad in his honor! https://jqy.org/nachas/
