Connect with Purpose
About us
The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington envisions an open, connected, and vibrant Jewish community that cares for each other, fosters Jewish learning and journeys, embraces Jewish peoplehood and Israel, and acts as a force for good in the world. Our mission is to inspire, build, and sustain vibrant Jewish life in a changing world by mobilizing our community in common purpose, intentional innovation, and effective action. Federation supports 58 local agencies, 14 national organizations, 18 overseas partners and programs, and 60+ congregations that care for those in need, deepen engagement in Jewish life and connect Jews locally, in Israel, and around the world. Justice for the poor, honoring seniors, supporting those who are ill or in crisis, nurturing and educating our children, inclusion of all, and helping refugees find freedom and economic self-sufficiency are central to our values and the programs we support. We are equally committed to inspiring learning and experiences in order to shape our Jewish communal identity. Formal education opportunities and informal Jewish experiences like summer camps, youth groups and trips to Israel provide learning, recreational, cultural and social activities that nourish our bodies and our minds. We connect with purpose through our culture, history, and identity.

There’s nothing quite like summer camp — except summer camp with even more new friends. This year, Federation is awarding larger scholarships to more local first-time summer campers than ever before, thanks to an expanded grant pool from the Foundation for Jewish Camp. Applications are open now! We can’t wait to see more children and teens experience the impact of Jewish summer camp. https://lnkd.in/gq2Piyvi Photo Credit: Capital Camps & Retreat Center

Join the Greater Washington Jewish community — and thousands from across North America — as we mark one year since the historic March for Israel. Together, we’ll demonstrate our commitment to unity in the aftermath of the October 7th attacks and the unprecedented spike in antisemitism that followed. As we continue to navigate the year ahead, it matters more than ever for us to support each other and come together as one community.

Earlier this month, more than 125 local commercial real estate professionals gathered for Federation’s biannual Real Estate Division breakfast. Panelists Alisa Rosenberg, Todd Rich, and Scott Nudelman shared insights on leadership, innovation, and entrepreneurship. We are grateful to event co-chairs, Meg Brown and Scott Nudelman, and the Real Estate Division committee for filling the room with industry leaders who share a deep commitment to keeping our Jewish business community connected and vibrant.

Six years ago today, the deadliest attack on a Jewish community in the U.S. claimed the lives of 11 members of our Jewish community. May the memories of Joyce Fienberg, Richard Gottfried, Rose Mallinger, Jerry Rabinowitz, Cecil and David Rosenthal, Bernice and Sylvan Simon, Daniel Stein, Melvin Wax, and Irving Younger be for a blessing.

This week, we will mark the first Simchat Torah since the tragic attacks in Israel one year ago -- a traditionally joyous day now clouded by sorrow. As we welcome the holiday, this photo of the team at Congregation Har Shalom offers a reminder that our people will indeed dance again. May this High Holiday season mark the beginning of a sweet and peaceful year for us all.
