With 30 days left until the election, have you registered to vote? Do you plan to vote? While you may feel like your vote “doesn’t matter,” it’s important to recognize that your voice may be more important in elections both national and local. In 2020, President Biden secured an electoral victory over incumbent Donald Trump by narrow margins: ~20,000 vote difference in Wisconsin, ~12,000 vote difference in Georgia, ~11,000 vote difference in Arizona, etc. While the electoral college may make your vote feel less impactful in the Presidential race, it’s significant to recognize that mobilizing yourself and a few unregistered voters in your network could make all the difference in these closer elections. When you vote, you're able to choose who represents you in Congress; in districts like NM-02 and PA-07, Dave Vasquez and Susan Wild won their Congressional election by margins as narrow as a few thousand voters. These representatives, who vote for or against the bills brought to the floor of Congress, should represent your community and your voice. By submitting your feedback on bills -- you, as one of their constituents -- can show support or opposition for the bills in Congress that address issues such as Social Security, climate change, and others frequently brought up in Congress. By using IssueVoter, you can track who your Congressional representative is and how they’ve been voting on bills brought to the floor with our IssueVoter Scorecard to give you a better idea of how you can use your vote -- all while sending your opinion on current bills to your representative! All eyes were on Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Ohio Senator JD Vance last night during the Vice Presidential debate, touted to be the last debate before the 2024 elections. Moderated by Margarent Brennan and Norah O’Donnell of CBS, the debate highlighted various policies from both the Republican and Democratic sides – with Walz and Vance maintaining their party’s stances on various issues. One of the more time sensitive questions was posed by O’Donnell, who asked Vance for the Trump-Vance ticket’s stance on climate change to reduce the impacts of natural disasters like Hurricane Helene. With the tragedies taking place among the Southeast, both Vance and Walz agreed that something had to be done to better assist families who are displaced and struggling; the two, however, differed on their stances in regards to climate change. Vance focused on pivoting the question to discuss the economy, calling carbon emissions “weird science,” discussing how America must expand our clean economy. Walz countered, reaffirming Vice President Harris’s stance on working to fix the climate to protect American families. Both candidates barely addressed the little support offered to Hurricane Helene victims; while the question asked by O’Donnell called for a response to climate change, there was room to discuss the gridlock in Congress that has prevented the distribution of funds to government organizations like FEMA that are working directly on the ground in disaster rescue. Bills such as H.R. 8716, which would have given FEMA $7 billion to replenish their emergency disaster funds, went widely ignored this summer in favor of more politically contentious issues like the ban on TikTok. Another topic of discussion was immigration – likely to be one of the biggest issues for voters coming into the ballots besides the economy. Vance made a comparison to the state of immigration under Former President Trump’s administration to the Biden administration, calling for a repeal of the immigration reforms made by Biden. Walz discussed the congressional halting of the bipartisan bill S. 4361 (https://buff.ly/47OUKXw), which was expected to pass due to bipartisan efforts but fell short of the 60 votes needed in the Senate. This was another policy-centric point of contention between the two candidates, with both calling for congressional action to be done at the southern border. IssueVoter has been tracking a wide range of bills that have hit the congressional floor since Congress resumed being in session after their month-long “August Recess.” One of our Fall 2024 interns, Francesca Carney, helped research H.R. 1398, which asks the question: “Should the DoJ prosecute individuals involved in espionage or hacking, particularly those with ties to the Chinese Communist Party?” This bill intends to “counter national threats, particularly those posed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), including espionage on U.S. intellectual property and academic institutions.” IssueVoter identified what the proponents and opponents of this bill are saying: - Proponents claim the need for stronger security of our technological innovations, stating that this bill would help protect Americans against economic espionage, hacking, and other issues of security that individuals in the government say are affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party. - Opponents claim that the passing of this bill will further the “forever foreigner” stereotype against Asian immigrants and Asian Americans, also stating that this bill would bring back a time when the research of Asian scholars across America was being questioned by the government as a result of their ancestry. To read more on this analysis of H.R. 1398 and our team’s analysis of other bills on the congressional floor, download the IssueVoter mobile app or go to our website!

When Vice President Harris said “Donald Trump got on his phone, called up some folks in Congress, and said ‘kill the [border security] bill’,” during the debate, what exactly did she mean? Killing the bill is another word for the end of a bill’s life in Congress; but what does it mean to intentionally kill a bill, as VP Harris implied? By intentionally killing a bill, members of Congress can help establish a specific agenda that can support a particular party platform, improve their reputation, or otherwise benefit themselves or their party as an individual member of Congress. In the case of H.R. 815, the bill that Vice President Harris discussed in the debate, the bill was worked on as a bi-partisan effort – a rare feat for the typically polarized Congress we tend to see. Therefore, it was expected that the bill would pass with support from both Republicans and Democrats in both the House and the Senate. But once told to “kill the bill,” Republicans in the Senate voted against H.R. 815. However, other bi-partisan bills are in the works before the coming election. Do you think we should have a 32-hour workweek? 🤔 If passed, the reduced standard workweek would take effect in increments, with employers reducing the workweek by 2 hours per year. If employees work over 32 hours per week, they would be compensated at 1.5 times their usual per-hour rate. If employees work more than 12 hours per day, they would be compensated at double their usual per-hour rate. So what do you think? It's never been easier to make your opinion known to your lawmakers. Visit IssueVoter.org to share how you feel with the click of a button. #IssueVoter #Vote #Election #CivicEngagement #Congress #LaborBills
